I know everyone is gonna say that the best tarantula to start out with is the rose hair but really there not cool looking. The only tarantulas I like are the red knees and the cobalt blues but I heard cobalt blues are highly agressive and usually wild caught.Which tarantula is a better starter to have I have never took care of a invertebrate and which would be better to handle and not freak out and try to kill me thank you

my favorite taratulas are the pink-toes & striped knee taratulas both are begginners

pink toes-docile but, jumpy for a housing one you shouldn't go over a ten-gal because taratulas rely on touch & smell as there main senses so a large enclosures aren't good there areborial so some choose to use a 5 gal flipped to the side but, taratulas get hurt way to easy from falling if you want to give your pink-toe room to climb then use a critter keeper of 7-10in high

striped knee-these might climb if given the chance but are more terrestrial there larger than pink-toes so a 10-gal works well for one & these are usually docile & un-jumpy spiders

I'm not really of fan of Rose Hairs in general, they are basically your tipical brown tarantula.

I'd cast my vote to any of the avics or brachys. Though avics are cheaper, if price is an issue. For more info, checkout the link in my signature to the Arachnoboards, the online community for all things spineless. ~ Rex

There are some things to consider. Price, size, availability, gender, do you want to see it, and handleability. I wouldn't consider the cobalt blue. It is a very pretty color but you will never see it. Basically it is a pet hole and like you mention agressive. I like the Mexican Red Knee (B. smithi), she is my avatar. She is almost 9 years old although we haven't had her that long. They are only CBB, because their site is protected, so you will pay more for it then some. I would agree that any of the brachypelma are a pretty good starter tarantula. The larger the tarantula and if it is a female the more expensive they are, generally but it depends on the species. We now have 63 tarantulas. If you really want color and you don't what to handle it much the advics are nice I love my A. versicolor. As a sling it is bright blue but as it matures it will become red. They are some dwarf species that are docile and like the name says small. But unless you have a great pet store that carries a lot of tarantulas you might have to order it online. We get most of our tarantulas from the reptile swap. Here is versi we believe that it's a girl. The red one is a picture that I found on the web, but that is what a mature versicolor looks like. The last one is my Mexican Red Knee.

Some said striped knee if you mean an A. seemanni I would pass on that for a starter "T". We call ours Psycho, she would bite you in a heartbeat. If you leave her alone she is just fine. I know of a couple other people that have a similar experience with them as well.

Arachnoboards is where's it at for talking about inverts.

I dont know what I am going to get yet depends on what I see at the MARS reptile show I might get a strip knee I doubt I will hold it alot because I am not really comfortable with a 4" furry thing on my hand.Today I went to a petstore and there was a empeoror scorpion I like them so maybe one of those.

I wouldn't go with a striped knee, true zebra or a couple of common names that it has, it is an A. seemanni as they can be aggressive. Even though you might not want to hold it now you might later, or you might have to touch it. Ours is much happier since we have given her a deep substrate to dig in. This is a picture of ours it's in the bottoms in the tunnel. Which ever you decide just do research before you get either animal.
