right now i am using shredded coconut husk and i dont think i like it much. he is eating it with his crickets and i am constantly pulling it out of his eyes, i have also used the fine coconut husk that looked like dirt and didnt like that ether. what else is there that is safe, and looks good? any type of sand? or should i go for the carpet? is it possible and safe to grow grass in there?

I've had WDs for the past 7 1/2 years and I have tried a number of substrates. My favorite would have to be simple expanding peat moss (eco earth, bed-a-beast, etc.) It will not muddy water they way potting soil might, it passes right throught the animals if ingested, soft feel, nice smell, absorbent, and looks natural.

Just a note, if you keep it soaking wet for prolonged periods of time, it will beguin to decay. The way to prevent this is regularly (once a week) move most or all decore out of its spot and with both hands mix the moss all together. This brings air into the soil and alows the bottom wet layer to conjoine with the dry top layer. In this fasion, you are able to create a Bio Active Substrate, meaning you have a healthy amount of bacteria living in a soil, breaking down any waste. This means you only change substrates every few years! This would be very risky if you did not churn the substrate. Hope this helps ~ Rex

ive seen cages that just have rocks in it. they would take the hole cage with the rock but turned half into water. all they did was add slate rock between the smaller rocks. thye had a pump to the water side and added several fake plants and limbs to the enclusore. best thing to do is just look this idea online.

Actually Eco Earth, Forest Bedding, Peat Eliminator and Bed-A-Beast are all coconut fiber.

You could use any of the coconut fiber substrates and put moss on the top to keep the substrate moist and keep it from getting everywhere. Almost like a carpet. Or you could use a plastic turf like carpet.

Perhaps a heavy layer of moss is your answer. My friend has one, and he uses moss. He keeps it nice and damp.

100% natural moss, I mean. So I don't think it hurts them if they ingest a bit, but I could be wrong.
