I have a 3 month old Kenyan Sand Boa that simply will not eat for me! I have researched this on the web and have tried several different things lately and she still wont go for it!

She made a 1100 mile drive with me in her Deli cup and I know that stressed her out, and then she was in a cool (70 or so) environment for 3 weeks. I have her habitat set up now, sand substrate in the warm side (I keep it around 90-95 day/80's at night) and wood shavings on the cool side... she did go into molt and I know that messed w/ her appetite as well. She had a very difficult molt as well... I had to soak her several times and assist her with the shedding. I have tried warmed up pinkies in a seperate container (at night) and even tried braining the last one as I heard that usually stimulates appetite... nope. It was still there in the morning. I have tried the "Zombie mouse dance" and she did strike a couple of times about a month ago, had it in her mouth, but eventually just let go of it and ignored it...

I am worried that she's not going to make it through this, she is weak and looks very dehydrated... she does have a small water dish in her cage, but i have never seen her drink.

On a good note though, she is still pretty active in her cage still, goes from warm side to cool side and burrows well...

The only thing I have not tried is live pinkies and that's because I can not get them here in Waco...

Anything I may be over looking gang???

Some people are disgusted, but there's  a method called "braining". You split the head open with a knife, and usually the smell of the gore intices reluctant feeders.

Rest in Peace Odin!!!  Your life may have not meant anything to those that abused you; but you meant everything to me.  You will be missed my little friend.

Hi Keare, When I got my first Kenya Sand Boa last year, I also had a hard time getting it to eat the first few months. What we tried was putting him into a small pillow case/herp bag or if you don't have one, you can even use a small brown paper bag and put the pinky in the bag with the snake. Either tie the pillow case or fold the top on the bag, so he cant get out, but leave the case or bag in his enclosure-just in case he gets out. It took a few trys, but he/she now eats on his/her own. We now feed frozen/thawed large pinks- we pick him up & place him on top of the substrate and use feeding tongs to hold the pinky in front of the sand boa, and he grabs the pinky and proceeds to constrict it, then eats it. Also try feeding at different times of the day or night, I believe the best time is around dawn or dusk(or simulate that time) and try feeding then. We feed at ours at late evening to dusk, and even a few times at night (depending on when we get home from work, lol). Also I have heard the braining method works too, but how big of a pinky are you trying to feed? It maybe too large, in that case you can also try cutting the pinky in half (sorry I know its gross), and then trying feeding half of it to see if it will eat(if it does, try and give it the other half when its done) but keep trying the different methods, do whatever it takes to get him/her to eat-right! Good luck, and I hope this might help you out! I just got 3 new baby Kenya Sand Boas this week, so now I have 4!      ~Marine

Hopefully your snake wil start feeding soon. Check out this link, it gives several ideas on how to help young sand boas eat. I have a ksb that used to be a real pain to feed, but once she got big enough to take fuzzies, she really became a more aggressive eater. I don't know if she likes the bigger prey or what? Maybe your snake will be like this. I hopr it makes it. I hopr the link helps.

Sad to say, my KSB passed on to herp heaven Thursday...

Thank you all so much for the advise, I literally tried any and everything over the last 2 months to get her to feed, all habitat conditions where ideal... not sure where I went wrong with her... damn, she was so beautiful and a complete sweetheart!

She'll be sorely missed...

I am so so sorry to hear that! I know what it's like to lose a herp family member, it's never easy. But you did try, so dont beat yourself up about it. Again I'm sorry to hear he/she died     Marine
