Anyone have any ideas on how to accurately sex black throat monitors? My monitor is about 4 feet long and I am trying to figure out what sex it is. I know that it is difficult, to determine if it is female, and that to be 100% sure it's a male you have to see his hemipenis. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.

Well, unfortunately it is highly dangerous to sex monitors by sex probing unless you are a trained professional. However, you have a sizable animal, and if it is indeed a male, he will not be shy to show you. Females have an analogous structure to the hemipene called the hemiclitoris. They are smaller, and do not have the "flowering" that hemipenes have. Plus there's the fact females are modest, and most people rarely glimpse one in thir monitors life.
Back on the subject, if you do have a male, and he's a 4ft'r, you should know by next defecation. Males pop out their "bad boys" quite often to clean them during this time. A great thing to do is to fill the bath tub up a bit (Not too deep, just enough to slighly cover the monitor's back) with lukewarm water. It triples as a time to soak for moisterizing sheds, exercise by swimming, and potty time. Watch closely, and you'll see.
Another, not so reliable way is to look at the hemipenal bulges on the underside of the tail. Females have a small bulges too though, so unless you have a pair to compare, it's somewhat harder.

I've never kept BTMs, but I do know that like Savannahs, they don't have the "spurs"/"claspers" like a few monitor species have. If they did, again, you're have to know what they look like, and two the size difference. Why females have a smaller version of claspers, I don't know. I have a couple of pictures of my Savannah Nether-regions and male organs. It's pretty graphic. I do not know if Lizard pornography is allowed on RC forums.
