| At this time of year, there are many grasshoppers in my area. Walking along overgrown lanes near a wildlife rehabilitation center where I study/work, I see scores of them jumping among the grass. So I was wondering if this abundant food source is appropriate for my leopard gecko, Elliot. I would clip the back legs to prevent jumping and injury to the lizard, and I know that this area isn't sprayed with chemicals. Are there any hazards associated with grasshoppers as leopard gecko food?

I don't believe that you will have a problem with feeding them to your gecko (taking into account that you know that no chemicals are used in the area and what not). A variety in a reptiles diet is good-grasshoppers can only help.

That would be fine, a varied diet is always good. And since you live near a wildlife station or something like that, I doubt they would use harmful chemicals.

Let me know if your geckos like the grasshoppers. In the past I have tried feeding them to my bearded dragons, and they wouldn't eat them. My dragons would bite into them and then spit them out. I don't think that they liked the way the grasshoppers taste. My dragons might have just been overly picky.

Wild caught insect may harbor parasites, which could be passed on to your leo. In the wild, this is usually not harmful, but in captivity they can be re-exposed over and over and end up with a huge parasite load.
