It is very good to wash your hands both before and after handling your herp, along with using hand sanitizer. (I keep a big pump-style bottle of it beside my viv (habitat). Reptiles can carry salmonella, so sanitizer and antibacterial soap are important. Also, before you handle your snake, you want to make sure you have any germs and/or odors off your hands, ESPECIALLY if you've been handling their food (mice, f/t <frozen/thawed> or live).
