You can get just a fluorescent light from a hardware store for a snake. You don't have to shell out the price for a uvb fluorescent from a pet store. You don't need a uvb light for snakes but it won't hurt them. I have read and talk to a herpetologist that says it may help if you are having problems with them eating but it really isn't necessary. But remember that it won't heat the tank.

as several folks have said, you really do not need a uv bulb for your ball. i prefer a under tank heat source placed as far to one side as youi can, it will need a cool spot too
be humble,and don't stumble this applies to those who like to only use sientific names to thier herps to impress newbies

NEVER use a "hot rock". They heat fluctuates and can cause severe burns on your pet.

It really all depends on what herp you have. Basking repiles like bearded dragons and iguanas require a heat source from above. I prefer incandescent as they get your reptile's attention and aids in viewing. Plus, I once saw a beardie in a store who had a ceramic and didn't know where to bask. He would run all around his cage, looking for the spot. When he came to where the "light" was, he stopped and gaped, as usual. Plus, they are REALLY expensive compared to incandescents. For a 60 watt ceramic, usually 15-20 bucks. Non-basking herps (frogs, non-basking snakes, salamanders) will be fine with any of the above mentioned sources. (Except hot rocks, obviously)

Any one ever used a heat panel (it is a panel that emits infrared radiation)?
