| Reptile Gal, The thought is that in the wild leos consume limestone, gypsum or alluvial soils (all found int heir natural habitat) to get the dietary calcium they require and to offset the high phosophorous levels in most insects. In captivity, some leos will contineu this behavior, especially if they are not being properly supplemented. Also, leos have a natural behavior of licking things in their surrounding to help identify them, some particles of sand are consumed this way. Most of the time impaction is not a risk as long as a fine grain product is being used, however - if the leo is ill, or if the substrate is large and coarse and of course if improper supplementation is taking place...impaction can result. Hope this info helps a bit!
