I'm pretty sure that this has already been requested, but what do people think about a croc forum? This would most likely not be about their captive care but it would still be unigue to have one and talk about their wild habits, conservation, etc.

I would think a Test forum would be a good idea.A test forum is a forum where people post their ideas for a forum and put them to the test.Say someone wants a Morph forum.They go to the Test forum and post a topic.The subject is called "Morph Forum".The discription has the very first topic.Say they wanted a Ball python morph as a topic.Then they put ball python morphs.The first topic should be included in the post as well.People post on that topicand if they like it,R.M. (or any other mod.)makes the topic.If not,then we just ignore the topic and move on.What do ya think?

Ethics forum?

How about an ethics forum? For input on substrate debates, rants and raves about all things reptile, and general ethics related questions about the herp hobby...of course no specific names of breeders/sellers/petstores. I would have a lot to contribute to this forum!

Vivarium Forum

I would like a vivarium forum where people can share ideas and show pictures of there vivarium set-up or naturalistic vivarium. Naturalistic vivariums really bring out the beauty of herps, thats why I think we should have a vivarium forum.

I am a member of The Pangea Forums and Geckos Unlimited in addition to this site, and those sites send you an e-mail notifying you when someone replies to a thread you are "subscribed" to. I think that (if the person wants) you should send them e-mails to let them know if someone has answered their threads or ones they have replied to. Please put this into consideration.

It seems to me that a lot of people screw up whenever they try to create a poll thread. I know the instructions are there whenever you're making one, but lets face it: most of the little kiddies just don't pay attention.

I'll admit that the whole "created-a-new-line-for-each-poll option" thing is a little confusing. Now I managed to get it right my first time (perhaps because I actually read the directions), but on every other forum I'm a part of, it's a little more simpler to follow; i.e. there's a separate field for how many options you wish as well as a seprate field for each option.

Maybe the admins/mods can look into this. Because what is happening is one of the children screws up a poll thread, then they can't delete it, so they keep making duplicate threads until they manage to get it right. The end result is 4-5 different topics titled "whats your fav ___?"

Please, if you are new to the site and have some reptile experience do not call yourself an expert at any time. People that have been studying reptiles their whole life most likely don't call their selves experts since they learn something new about reptiles almost everyday. Also read the Pinned_Topics and search to see if what you want to post has been asked before.

If anyone has anything to add to this that newbies should know feel free to add it.

Everyone gets pissed because people repost the same questions so if I have a question and I remember it was once talked about on here I do a search for it. Once the first page of stuff comes up I'll go to click on the next page and it gives me an error, it only allows one search every 60 seconds or something. What am I gonna do? Sit here for a minute waiting to click next? All I want is a reputable place online to buy a lizard.

Signature & Posting Tips

Excessively long signatures are quite annoying. Most everyone thinks so. So how can this issue be resolved?

First of all, huge pictures are a big contributor (no pun intended). If you have a picture of your animals, just a funny pic or want to show off your artwork or something, just put it all in one thread. Don't shove it in our faces everytime you post. It gets in the way and distracts from what you have to say. I took my picture down for this reason.

The second thing is kinda tricky. As some of you may have noticed, whenever you post or if you're editing your signature, the text field is on double-space by default whenever you press "enter" and start a new line. Sooo...if you're trying to list your animals, it comes out like this:

1 ball python

2 bearded dragons

1.4 anoles

3 dogs

...etc etc. Some of you have very long lists, so you can see how huge one post may seem. And then take into account if you post 2-3 times on one page....its a lot of scrolling down to read only a tiny bit of new material. So how do you get past this if its automatically set on double-spaced?

My trick is to open up a Notepad or Wordpad and type your signature there. Then copy/paste it into where you edit your signature, and it will remain single spaced. Using this method, you can have the same amount of information in your signature and take up half of the space. For example:

1 ball python
1.1 bearded dragon
3 hamsters
2 dogs

....a lot more concise and easier for all of us to read. This method is also useful for when you're typing out long posts and your internet connection may cut out, thus making you lose almost 10 mins worth of text! How many of you have experienced something like that? Just type out your post in NotePad, ann when you're done, copy/paste it into the field.

Another thing is ALL CAPS!!!! I know you may want emphasize some words, but this is the online equivalent of yelling indoors. Civil society just doesn't do this. I encourage everyone to make use of the bold, italicize, and underline options for putting emphasis on certain words and phrases. Its soooo easy to do, but I can tell you how if you haven't figured it out. Another step to making yourself sound more "sophisticated" for lack of a better word.

Okay....many of you seem to have trouble with the quote option. Its pretty easy if you're wanting to quote someone's entire post; you just click on the "quote" button above their post, and the rest you should already know. However, you may only want to quote only a small part of what they said without their entire post taking up a bunch of space, and/or if you want to comment on something specific they said. This is what most of you are doing;

That's not what it should look like. Not only does it show you didnt do it right, but it takes up unnecessary space, too!

For this, I should just "add reply" like you aliways do...but then, scroll down and you'll see a green line that says: "Last 10 Posts in descending order". If its not already open, click on that little box with a plus-sign in it to open it. After that, highlight the specific part of someone's post you want to quote, and copy/paste it into the "reply" field. Then highlight it again, and click on that little icon with the brackets...right above the B I U.

Tada! That phrase is now quoted, and you can post you reply right under it. My earlier example should look like this:

I don't know if I'm the only one that is annoyed with this but I hate that when you put a picture on a post you are making that the picture is huge and you have to make it smaller. I think it would be better if the picture came on the post smaller and you just have to make it a little bigger to the size you want.

Okay, steve62, I'm callin you out (I'm meaning this all in good fun, BTW)!

Its great you love leopard geckos, and they do make stellar beginner lizards, but dude, putting a whole caresheet on them in your signature is kinda excessive. I mean, there's about hundred different good caresheets on leos out there already (not to mention one on this website). Don't you think you're going a little overboard here? I personally think "Leopard geckos are awesome" and just a link to your favorite caresheet would be just as great.

Maybe its just me. I personally hate having to scroll down so much to read an entire thread when everyone's sig has a huge picture or a mountain of text in it. A personal photo of your fav herp or something is one thing; but putting redundant info (and double-spaced, for crying out loud) is another.

What does everyone else think?

Pinned Topics and misplaced threads

I know I've brought this up before, but its still a reoccuring issue, so I feel compelled to bring it up.

I'm really trying to be nice and open to these kinda things, but it seems like there's too many threads that discuss the same things. Here's some examples:

In the Beginner Herps section, there are: four "whats the best beginner lizard/snake?" topics in the past week or so. This is excluding the "beginner snake" thread already pinned.

In the Lizard Lounge, there are: at least 3 "favorite lizard" threads in the past 2 weeks or so. While the pinned "iguana" thread kinda has a similar discussion, perhaps one of those three can be pinned as well?

In the Snake Stuff section, there are: two threads ("Breeding Experience" and "reptile choice question") that probably should be in the general herp section.

I only bring the latter up because...isn't this why we have different sections in the first place? I just personally think that if it involves more than one group, it should be in the General section.

As far as the pinned topic thing goes (and I'm sure all the mods are rolling their eyes and sighing at this old song and dance...lol), I mean, again....we have pinned topics for a reason. I just don't think we need three polls all basically voting for each member's favorite reptile.

Is there any way these issues can be resolved?

One of the posting guidelines reads as:

To protect your privacy and to ensure your online safety, we ask that you do not post personally identifiable information. This includes phone numbers, address, instant messaging screen names (AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, etc) or web address leading to such information. Further, we ask that you do not share someone else’s personally identifiable information.

I can obviously understand real names, age, phone numbers and post addresses. But I don't get why a user can't include their AIM handle, or email address in their sig if they want. I only bring this up because in each members profile, there's fields to fill in those things, such as AIM addresses and whatnot. Likewise, you can look at any member's profile and see that information, if they choose to display it. Why is it a big deal for users to have that information in two places?

Also, I can understand other reptile forums, but whats the deal with other sites? I fail to see how if someone desires to put their myspace page in their signature, that constitutes "competition" to Reptiles Magazine. The same with any other website for that matter, as long as they're not a reptile forum.

Just wondering...

Pinned Topics

Some of you have expressed concern about older questions and topics being repeatedly brought up. We've listened to your concerns, and we have a solution: pinned topics.

Pinned topics are are important and relevant topics that are "pinned" at the top of their corresponding section. These topics should be questions and answers that are helpful to many people. A good example of a possible pinned topic would be one about which lizards are best for beginners. This is a question that has been posed several times, and members have given answers repeatedly. Rather than having to raise the question over and over, the topic will be pinned at the top, and anyone with that question can see it.

If you have a suggestion for topics that should be pinned, please let us know on this thread. Remember to include a link with your suggestion because it will be much easier to locate that topic. Also, please remember that although all suggestions will be considered, not all suggestions will be pinned.
