I got a chance to work with Rob Carmichael from the Wildlife Nature Center in Lake forest, IL on a show at a museum out here. The show was called "I like Spiders and Snakes Weekend". He has been on a show on Animal Planet and CBS morning show. Hubby and I did the spider portion of the show and Rob did the venomous snakes. Unless you are with someone that is trained don't do it. He never travels anywhere without anti-venom. He told us stories of some of the venomous snakes that they have had to rescue as well. When we went to his faculity he gave us the behind the scene tour of the place and I have to say I have much greater respect for venomous snakes then I did before and the people who handle them.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

best advice ive ever herd in regards to practicing to handle hots is to get a really pissed off rat snake and practice with that. try not to stress it out too much but its a good way to get the feel.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

i own 2 speckeld rattlers 2 nothern pacifics 2 southern pacifics 2 sidewinders 2 red diamonds and 2 westren diamond backs hotts are no joke and i can see alot of crap hittin the fan if ur not experienced with hotts stick with a camera take a picture dont listen to herptile that is the most un responsible way to catch a hott ive ever herd an corwin is a professional with a dagree under his belt u dont have 1 LEAVE THE HOTTS ALONE please dont mess with them get sum professional help before u even think about catchin them..

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

I just recalled something, steve was a good actor, when he played in his movie. Even better that you adopted what sound to be three lovely angels. Well, Chris and I have grad school and jobs to worry about, so when we have children, we worry about that toddler age of 2-4, where they love to run around and get into trouble. WE can always wait for Hots when they are older, might even get some mild hots, like European fire salamanders.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

Thanks. We have three adopted children ages 7-9-and 11. Any time we work with the hots the kids are sent to another part of the house and we are in the room alone. They are not allowed back into the room or any wear near the room until the cages are re-locked and they are given the OK to return. They do help with the feeding of the other snakes. The 7yo has her own BP and the boys have their corns. The chances of accidents with the children are less likely to happen if they are properly educated.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

Wow, 4 west. Diamonds. They must be alot of fun. A mohav and a black tailed too. We only have C. horridus, the timbers out in my area of Texas. I thought about keeping some hots, but Chris and I were thinking of children on down the line, and Hots probably aren't a good growing up environment for young kids.
But you give great advise on the field herping. I do the buddy system on almost all my field work, herping or decapodding, so it's second nature to me I thought it was common sense to go hunting with a friend or two.

Well, another nugget of knowledge, go out and buy an up to date field guide for your area and memorize the local Hots and Nots (mimics and similars.) Don't want to be afraid oa a Nerodia spp., but don't want to grab a A. picivorus thinking it's just a water snake.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

Just an FYI. Steve Irwin did a show here in Arizona about venomous reptiles of the Sonoran Desert. During the show you see him squatting and there is a rattlesnake slithering between his legs just inches from his crotch. I was informed by local herpers that the producers for that show used snakes from their collection and that the majority of the snakes used were venomoids. These herpers are very reliable people and I trust the information they gave me as fact. It may be true that Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin have/had great reputations as having contributed to the conservation of the worlds animals, but they are/were just actors in these programs and the producers are not going to allow them to risk injuries for simple ratings. Now to those of you who want to catch hot snakes. Find someone who has had years of experience herping hots and is willing to show you the ropes. Never go herping alone (always have a second set of eyes, hands and ears with you.) And most important, never handle hots if you cannot totally focus on the animal you are handling. I presently have six rattlesnakes and anytime I am working with them, weather I'm cleaning cages, feeding, or transfering them into a new cage, my wife is along side of me with a snake hook watching and relaying every movement the snake makes. One bite could cost you many thousands of dollars in medical bills and months of recovery.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

try the steve iwrin shows. If the snake seems like it cant tagg you once you touce it, then grabb it by the tail. But, if you cant grebb the tail, then leave it alone. But if you can then do it. Once in hand, hold the hand the tail is in high. Stay clear of the head. Wtch out for strike pisitions and sighns of agression. I will say if you haven't had much experience with keepin snakes in general then I'd say don't jump the gun and try it. It's too big of a risk to jump in head first before looking. I'll be honest, and I'm not saying this to be mean I'm just lookin out ofr the hobby and you, looking at your other posts it appears to me that it wouldn't be a good idea for you to go catch hots but that's just my opinion and I can't stop you so do what you wanna do. I just checked your profile and you label your occupation as a 5th grader...........in light of this I'm gonna say you aren't ready to be goin for the deadly things. If you plan on doin it anyways whatever, I just don't think it would be the best idea.

RE: Catching Venomous Snakes

Just out of curiosity, what do you plan using the portable weather thing for?

Catching Venomous Snakes

I've never done it.
