I actually didn't plan on dressing up Saga until I got to know her personality a bit. Also, I just happened to be walking by the toy department in walmart and saw these little Barbie dresses for $1.50. I thought you guys would be amused

Yeah, Loki tries to prop himself up on his tail when reaching and climbing..but his tail is super fat! lol Her little tail has practically no meat on it..that's why I'm feeding her a higher than normal fatty diet (at least until she gets some meat on her bones.)

Here are some new pics of Saga. I feed/soak her twice a day. Looks like this evening she wanted another bath! lol

The scattered pieces of brown/tan stuff is the mess she made of her food. Her foliage, decorations and half log were taken out for her feeding

I got Saga out for her morning bath this morning and she acted up even more than she did yesterday. lol She thinks she is intimidating with her loud hissing and whipping her itty bitty tail It's very different for me to experience a sav act this way. Loki only slightly hisses when he is on the floor around dogs and I've never heard Freya hiss. With regular handling I'm sure she'll be just as tame as Loki & Freya. Once I picked her up she's fine. I think she just doesn't like the surprise of the initial disturbance in the morning. She hasn't once tried to bite me so that's good news.

For breakfast this morning she had Zoo med's canned Tegu & Monitor food dusted with calcium powder. (I know for a fact that she did not have proper calcium in her diet at the pet store.) I have never fed Zoo med's monitor food to my savs before but i thought it might be a good way to encourage her to eat. Chicken is the first ingredient, then soybean meal, kelp meal, fish, some calcium, lots of vitamins and ...ground corn? Yeah I don't really agree with the corn but this was just a snack and will not be in her main diet.

Tomorrow she'll be fed some gut-loaded crickets.

Good to hear it! They had sav's at this exotics store (which I absolutely detest, but my sisters wanted to go there because they had bunny stuff) but they looked all dead in their 10 gallon with aspen splinters, what worried me most was that the Nile's the had been residing in the enclosure were all gone. I really wanted to take one home, but I couldn't for reasons of not supporting the store and I could not keep a sav.

Yes, I agree bad pet stores should be boycotted. However, it's not the animals fault for being stuck in that awful place. Also, if you don't buy the animal, someone else will (most likely someone who has no idea what they're doing)...either that or the animal dies in the horrific conditions. Then again, almost every herp book I've ever read says to never buy a sickly reptile. (especially sickly snakes) You might be tempted to save it, but the odds are that it will eventually die from disease.

I took that chance when I bought Saga. I knew she might die in the near future but so far, so good. I went to this reptile rescue website the other day and saw all these horrific pictures of malnourished, MBD, abused Savannah monitors (most of which whom died shortly after the photos were taken). It just broke my heart to see those poor creatures and what despicable people had done to them. well if you mean the other savs then they probably like her with ketchup since adult monitors will usually prey on younger ones

nice sav she looks like shes shedding but,that might be just the light

We only bought Saga for the time being. We want to focus on her recovery and her brothers were part of the problem (taking all her food). Saga looked like she wouldn't survive much longer in those conditions, but her brothers looked pretty lively and probably won't be at that store for long. Healthy looking monitors sell quickly.

Okay just wondering.

I think your savs though are so cute.I may get a bow for my new leo around Halloween.I may bring him/her trick-or-treating with me if my mom lets me,either the leo somehow goes with my costume or s/he has one or him/her own and the weather is good.Oh yeah.And taming.If she is still wild and nutso then I won't take him/her.

Well she is in quarantine right now so she's not allowed to meet any of my other herps for the next couple of weeks. Putting your new herps in quarantine is a crucial way to prevent spread of diseases or parasites from a new herp. I once heard a story about a guy's entire collection of monitors being wiped out in 24 hours after bringing a new monitor home. Therefore, it is prudent to be very careful with foreign animals. I wash my hands thoroughly after handling her and make sure I don't use any of the same utensils/cleaning supplies, food dishes, water dishes or unknowingly transfer any bedding. Cleaning of the cage is also done in a separate area.

Saga is doing wonderful! I got her out this morning to soak in some warm water and she started hissing and tried to tail-whip me! (That's good news.) Once I picked her up she calmed down and is now enjoying her bath. Last night she ate 2 pinkies and stayed directly under the heat lamp for a long while. I think Saga will do fine now that she has proper nutrition and heating. It's true they gave them crickets at the pet store but they were un-dusted and her brothers ate most of them before she had a chance to. She is pretty shy for a Sav and did not eat in front of us. However, I went to check on her and she had a fat little belly and the pinkies were nowhere to be found

That's a very adorable picture of the save. Sence everyone says there cute and get them, I wish I could get one now. I am going to hold off on that one though because I don't have enough enformation plus I am wanting a ball python and have to wait for the tinley park reptile show in October to get one.

New juvenile Savannah Monitor

Chris and I saw this cute little girl and just couldn't say no. We'd seen her at the local Pet Depot, with her two brothers (who we casually named Thor and Freyr). I've been wanting another baby monitor. After looking them over, and handling them, Thor was really squirmy and quicky defecated. Definately a healthy spunk. Saga at first seemed sick during our visits to the store, but really she was in a bad molt. (Horrible lack of humidity in the cage) They were all on the skinny side, especially her. We visited the Pet depot many times during the two months the trio was there, and decided whether or not to buy. Tonight, we had a discussion on whether or not to get her here, or wait til the reptile expo in late october to see if they had any, let alone any moderately healthy. We made sure she was alert/squirmy, walking around and responsive to stimuli before we bought her.

Well, Pet depot's care was deplorable, to say the very least. They were on "greeting mat" grade astro-turf, not reptile carpet. They had been out of water multiple times that we looked in on them over the weeks. Cage was too small for three 9 in. monitors, and there was not an adequate heat source, just a flourescent bulb placed on top the wire top. Well, we got her home, set her in quarintine from the other reptiles, gave her some Repti-aid by Flukers', and went about decorating her home. She has a log hide, some fake foliage, water bowl for drinking/soaking, eco-dirt substrate (coconut), heat rock buried and an over head heating bulb for a hot side of 97 (thermo) and a cool of 85. We even coaxed her into eating a pinky soaked in Ca powder and repti-vite. She'll be colorful again soon, heh. She's 9 and 1/2 inches, measured 09/13/08. She handles quite well.
