My monitor is about 4 feet long and I am trying to figure out what sex it is. I know that it is difficult, to determine if it is female, and that to be 100% sure it's a male you have to see his hemipenis. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas. I am not worried about profit or anything. Just breaking even would be great, this would be just for fun and I know I could find homes for all the babies. I would house the parents in an 18 x 18 x 24 enclosure (either species) and make sure they had great husbandry. I was just wondering which would be better or more fun to breed? I am not worried about money, but I don't want a gecko that every batch of eggs is infertile. And how would I breed and house the hatchlings of each of these species? I don't remember them being a factor in Florida herpetoculture in the 1970s and 1980s, but these flies are definite pests for my wife's corn snake colony now. Specifically, they swarm over anything dead - like thawed mice left in cages as food, and they also are attracted to fresh snake feces. But the worst problem is when they invade hatching snake eggs. They lay their eggs inside the first slits of hatching eggs. The maggots get into the umbilical areas of hatchlings very quickly and kill the slow hatchers by eating holes in their bellies.

I've been on a fact-finding mission about phorid flies lately. Apparently the fact that they actively attack hatching reptile eggs is not widely known, but should be in lieu of a possible factor in declining wild species if the flies are not native. I've wondered if anyone here has any experience or insights on these pests and how to deal with them? We now attach fine screen over ventilation holes in incubation tubs to keep them out, but even one fly slipping in when the lid is opened is enough to let them get started. The adult flies succumb to eating 'Fly Bait' left out in trays, so that helps keep their levels down. Have any of you found other effective ways to control them?

corn genes

i've been reading my new Corn Snake Manual (great job Bill and Kathy), and i'm interested in breeding Cornsnakes. A nature center calls us 6 - 10 times per year with unwanted pets, or herps found wandering in town. Most are red-ear sliders, boas, or Burmese pythons, but three times in the last few years the finds were sulcatas. I thought the newest one was a female at first, but it seems to be a male and has taken a real interest in one of my slightly smaller females that I didn't think was large enough to be reproductive. At least now I'm fairly sure that the smallest one is actually a female. Does anyone know what would happen if you bred a heterozygous lavender and a homozygous leucistic? Do you HAVE to feed pinkies, or are wax worms okay for the pregnant female? How many eggs do the females lay on average each year? Can you keep all the babies together in one terrarium? In the past I have breed burmese pythons and would like to deal with them some more in the future, as of right now I would like to work with any Asiatic Ratsnakes and uncommon colubrids, I also would like to breed Sailfin dragons and other Varanid species but enclosures are pricey to buy or make.

Thanks for your time
Joseph

How do you breed Tokay Geckos?

I want to get a breeding pair to breed, but Im not sure of the specific requirements for this species. I breed a pair of Albino striped Cal Kings as well as a pair of Mexican Black Kings. Some of you may see where I am going with this but what would the neonates look like if I cross the two pairs?

I know a fair amount about genetics and my whole purpose in crossing would be to introduce the Amel gene into the MBKs which is something I have never seen before.

Has anyone heard of this happening or would it even work? Is there a way to breed everything back out except the Amel gene?

People might jump on my case for producing a hybrid snake but I know that on the edges of their territories they often interbreed and have no problems producing viable offspring but feel free to let me know what you think.
breeding pac-man frogs

hey guys,

i was reading an article in my reptile usa magazine about breeding pac-man frogs and i was wondering whats the trick to finding the difference between males and females, i wanted to try breeding them.

any help would be appreciated
