That means that what we can keep in the hobby today is only a miniscule fraction of what once was. From the tiny Hylonomus, to the gigantic (although lost to science) Amphicoelias fragillimus. Evolution has produced a myriad of diverse reptilian and amphibian species that are now missing. But what if you could sink your hands through time, and pull out six of any reptile or amphibian species, to bring them to the present and keep them as your own.

So there’s only one rule, no more than six, and mammal-like reptiles count (I know some of you would be disappointed if you couldn’t pick Dimetrodon or Gorgonops).

Oh, and please state a reason for your choices.

Here’s my four:

Utahraptor

What can I say, my all time favorite dinosaur. As smart as a savanna monitor and as big as a whale, I could keep it in a fenced off area of the sea, and feed it fish, seals and about anything I want.

Junggarsuchus

(I don’t think I spelled this right)

A primitive crocodilian, this long legged “dog-croc” was a terrestrial predator. And, they they had 2-3 frogs in each container! They also told me that they can live their life in those containers and you should do water changes 3-5 times a YEAR! I am also into aquariums an I know that you are supposed to do 15% water changes every week and 25% every month. And for very small tanks, partial water changes 2-3 times a week. What can I do to convince the store that african dwarf frogs should be housed properly (2 gallons per each frog), have very frequent water changes, and aren't so simple to care for as they made it sound?

What was your first herp?

I'd like to know what your first herp was!

I usually say that my first herp was a Rough Green snake named Chloe (terrible choice too), but that is only because I always forget that I kept some frogs before that. Anything not ever used by my captives are eliminated from future enclosure designs and it just keeps getting whittled down from there till only what is USED by my animals even for a short amount of time(like a 145F basking spot) is left. Most people do not use this approach. They just follow the example of a bare minimum care sheets or the girl next door with the 2 leos and a rainbow boa. I feel that this is why most people in this hobby do not see or experience all that their charges have to offer and is why most keepers standers of success are just laughable. I currently have a New Mexican Milk Snake, a Ball Python and a Schneider's Skink. I just bought a 10 gallon tank and would like something to put in it. I would prefer something that either doesn't grow fast(so i have time to get a bigger tank) or something that will be able to fit in there it's whole life. I was considering Hermit Crabs, but i have had them before and would like something different. If you have any ideas what i should get or what you think would be fun let me know! I plan to do alot of research on what ever it is anyone suggests to make sure it would be the right pet for me!

Thank you to anyone who gives an opinion or idea.

Wild Caught VS Captive Bred

What does everyone think about wild caught herps? If a reptile that you wanted was a wild caught import would that stop you from buying it? I may be able to get a new snake after the new year. I want a rufous beaked, but they few I find on the internet are wild caught. I just don't like the idea of contributing to herps being taken out of the wild when there are so many captive bred available.

Thanks to everyone who voted for Daisy for Reptile of the Day

I appreciate all of the input & votes for Daisy, she is very special to our family, my son is so proud, Thanks again Jeff HopkinsHerps.

back from the reptile expo

hey guys im back from the orlando reptile show! it was a blast! there were awhole lot more reppys and supplies at this expo and only one hands on show. which i didnt mind at all. (i go for the buying/examining side of the reppy expo's.) while i was there i seen a BEAUTIFUL sunfire female beardie and instantly fell in love and wanted to buy her, so i asked the guy if he could hold her there in her cage until i was ready to come back and get her at the end of the show,he said yes. (i was ecstatic to get her and take my new baby girl home.) so a few hours later.... i'm pooped and decided it was time to call it a day and scadattle, soo im making my way to the front of the expo to go by his booth and pick up what was supposed to be "my new baby" and he ended up selling her out from under me! it was a bummer that he did that to me, but i had a great time at the show like i do all the others, and i still got my beardie buddy spike to chill with at my pad.

Another Petsmart story

A few days ago I was at petsmart when my mom was getting dog food. I wiggle them in front of her face, and she will lick them but turn away as if not interested. This concerns me because calcium and other supplement powders don't stick to mealworms as well as crickets.

Yoshi is currently eating six mealworms a night with a waxworm added a couple times a week. She has a calcium dish in her tank at all times. I dust her food with calcium daily because she is still young. I use calcium/D3 every five days right now(it won't stick to the mealworms).

Yoshi is still eating fine.
