I realize that bearded dragons and leopord geckos are tied at the top. this is understandable since they are both resonably easy to keep. especialy for a beginner. I have two bearded dragons, and they are easier than just about any other reptile I have tried keeping. red eared sliders are fun but are not as easy, so if the question was "easy" instead of "best" I would have voted for the gecko instead of the turtle. and yet on the topic that is adressed, I put MY vote on bearded dragon, and slider.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

i'd have to agree with outcast boa's have always been rewarding pets i've got a columbian rtb & there my favorite species i'd like to get him a female when he's older but,my mom can't stand 20-30 babie boas in the house i myself think it would be fun with a bunch of sweater boxes or a freedom breeder rack.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

boas

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

The herptile master (3/26/2008) I have six reptiles. One being a bearded dragon and two being leapard geckos. These two spichies are great for beginer herp breeders. Both have great personalitys, both are gentile, and are easiy to take care of. However, i would suggest geting a leapard gecko. They are gentile and easiy to take care of. Also, they only get up to 8in long. Up to three adults can be put in a large cardboard box. For this encloser, some peaple like to just put news papper for a bedding. Although,I suggest that you put bark as a bedding. This will make the gecko feel more at home. You should put caves in the encloser so the gecko has a place to hide in the day time. Also, i have noticed that my female leapard gecko likes to climb to the top of the plants that i put in the tank. So i suggest that you should put fake plants and vines so the gecko has a place to hide and climb. In terms of lighting, i think that you should get a red light. This form of light will give a good amount of heat and the gecko cant see the red light. Make sure that only one side of the tank is warm and the other side is cool. You may already know this but, leapard geckos are insectevoreous. This means that they eat mainly insects. So i think that you should feed your leapard gecko every other day. You should feed it things like mealworms, crickets, and red worms. One more thing, if you wont to keep more than one leapard gecko in one tank, then make sure that there is only one male. And in the breeding season,"which starts in february and gos on untile the end of march, Hold the females belly up to a fine light and look for eggs. You will know what to look for when you find it. If she is pregnet, then remove her from the tank. Wait till she drops her eggs then move the eggs to a small tank with moss. This is all i know about incubateing the eggs. PS,Although some peaple put put there geckos in a large box, i suggest that you put your geckos in a 20-30 galleon tank.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

I like Leopard Geckos and Bearded Dragons.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

Why lock it? I know leos and beardies are great beginners, some of those listed are interesting to breed or neat because how complex they are, but I have found my 2 boas to be my most rewarding pets. Nothing like the crested gecko's prehensile tail or sticky pads, or the size of an iguana, but all the same, fairly simple to care for and great company because they won't run around like lizards but will enjoy handling, or just wrapping around your arm when you're doing something...like checking out reptiles.com.
I find many others interesting, but luv boas the best.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

I'm a huge fan of crested geckos. They don't take up much space, as they stay small, they tolerate handling very well, and they are gorgeous...I could go on for days about how great these little guys are. I highly recommend cresties to anyone who enjoys critters. Super easy to care for as well-no additional light source (they're nocturnal), crickets & baby food...doesn't get any easier. I know they're not listed but they're awesome...they should be listed...
Annette

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

in conclusin, BEARDIES ROCK OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

Breaded dragons are the best for pets they love to take bath's mine loves to take walks. There just great

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

I think leopard geckos. I have some and they never give me any trouble. They are pretty tame and never bite unless it's a mistake. When they do bite it doesn't hurt at all. Before I calculated that it was the least expensive reptile. All they need are worms, crickets, 5-10 gallon tank for one and some plastic containers.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

Bearded Dragons Rule!!! They are the best snake, not too big not too small, easy to care for, inexpensive, and beautiful in every way. No two snakes have the same personality and some are very affectionate. But they live for a very long time so you have to be comitted to keeping them. I have a 5 y.o. female Leo and out of all the pet repitles I had she really has shown the most personality and most tolarnce to being held. lol, it's funny when you are getting their food and they are already waiting by their food dish when you get back.

But like all animals, including dogs and cats, there are some from every species that can't stand looking or being touched by humans and some that tolarate or might even enjoy being held.

But one thing i have to add is how it scares me to hear alot of people asking what is the best lizard that you can "play" with. Reptiles aren't play things and everybody should be told how delicate they are. They most "playing" I do with my leo is let her climb my arm onto my shoulder where she will sit until she wants to go back into her cage.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

Based on the choices provided, I vote for the bearded dragon. They tolerate regular handling very well, live a long time, are very beautiful, need relatively little care, and can and will eat almost anything! They might not be the most active of pet lizards but they like to get out of their cage often and aren't fast runners so you can let them walk around on the ground w/ supervision. Some people are afraid of lizards or snakes or both, but when I show the my "Blue", they fall in love. I think she has changed alot of people's views of reptiles. It's not to say that these other reptiles are "bad pets", just not the all around pet like the blue tongue.

RE: Which reptile is the best pet?

Which is more rewarding is kind of a different question that what is the best beginner.
