How did they get there? What kind of place do you live in (not offensiveley. I meant near any water source or not. LOL:laugh. And did it just rain before you found them? In alabama, the only place I've seen a wild salamander (and caught it) was in a brook in northern alabama. I've never actually been herping for salamanders before, but that was the only place I found and caught a wild salamander in my life.

here's a pic of it and the place I caught it. It's a souther two lined salamander.

RE: I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

good luck with the babies! i love salimanders

RE: I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

Yes they are, if you can re-locate them to a nice little pond or water area. You might establish a breeding spot.

RE: I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

Well, I got an email back from the Washington Herp Atlas, and they're going to include my find in next years maps and stuff. She said it was very interesting that I found them, as they normally spend most of their lives underground. She said she's guessing these are juveniles that were just dispersing.

I'll see if they're interested in a cricket, then let them go today.

Pretty cool little critters though!

RE: I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

You could try blood worms. I have very little experience with salamanders but the few I have seen seemed to have a deep love for blood worms.

RE: I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

Well, salamanders can eat crickets, maybe some chopped earth worms. Meal worms might not be a good idea

pictures would help in identification

I found six dark reddish brown salamandars...

they were all in one place, hangin' in the rainwater collected in a dog water bowl... brought them inside for a little observation.... wondering what tehy eat? Tried worms, not interested (probably the whole captivity thing)...

I think they're northwestern salamandars. All appear to be juveniles... no more than 4 inches long each.
