Budgett's frogs require it to breed, but not to thrive.

I know this is an old thread, but I just came across it and wanted to correct some information. This is based on my own experience keeping and breeding all three species of Budgett's frogs over the course of nearly 20 years, as well as the experience of other longtime Budgett's frog keepers I know.

Budgett's frogs do actually require aestivation to thrive long-term in captivity, whether one intends to breed them or not. If deprived of the opportunity to aestivate for long periods of time, Budgett's frogs suffer a marked decrease in overall health and lifespan, and become highly susceptible to serious (usually fatal) respiratory infection and stress-related illness. This is one of the main reasons why they're not recommended for beginners.

Skipping aestivation for a year here and there might not cause a major issue (though the risk is still there), but multiple consecutive deprivations should definitely be avoided. These are the only common "pet" frogs that I'm aware of that should be aestivated in captivity as part of regular maintenance.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

what about aestivation?
and i agree about the care sheet somting was funny about the tooo simple set up about the set up could their be 5 percent land like just a rock and if a put a cave underwate rcould they drown

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

I must say herpdude is very correct. If you really think about it, six months is not that long compared to those animals fifteen to twenty year lifespans. There is still plenty of time for things to go wrong. And I can almost guarantee you that something will eventually happen if you do not change their living situation.
A twenty gallon tall for the White's tree frog, a ten gallon for the gliding frog, and a twenty gallon tall for the crested gecko will provide adequate housing for each. You could even add another of the same species to each tank if you want.

And about the Budgett's frog, they could definitely not live in any mixed tank, or even with other Budgett's frogs. They are cannabalistic, plus, they will eat any other frog or lizard that can fit in their mouth (which can fit more than you would think). Did you see that baby Budgett's frog eat the tadpole that was the same size as it on the Aqualand Pets Plus page? Imagine what an adult could fit in their mouth. So, no, just keep the Budgett's frog (and preferably all of your reptiles alone).
Aestivation is similar to brumation; it is cooling off an animal in the winter to stimulate the coming of spring, and the coming of breeding season. They have been living together 4 6 months now with no problems. None have gotten sick and they all seem happy and healthy. As long as i keep the humidity level up, everyone is happy! Oh, and my Whites tree frog is fully grown. He has shown no signs of eating the others b/c they r to big 2 fit in his mouth!

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

Oh. I would really suggest moving them all into individual enclosures. It must be very stressful for them (gliding frogs are especially stress-prone). I am surprised the White's have not eaten the other tank mates, they must not be big enough. Herps are herps not community fish and if you can not provide adequate housing then you should not have gotten more herps and I would wait until you have enough money to give each animal an enclosure before you go and buy another one.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

No. The Whites, Gliging frog and Crestie r in 1 tank together. I have a exo terra terrarium with a whites tree frog, crested gecko and blue gliding frog. I was hoping to move them into a larger tank soon. If i encorperated a water feature, could i keep one? How do i care for it? Also will it eat my gliding frog. Its too big for my whites but i dont know about budgetts, if its 2 big 4 them as well.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

It's okay. I know sometimes people will get their mind set on something (I do it too) and sometimes everything just seems wrong because you really want to get what you want. And if you still want to keep a Budgett's frog inside, they are very simple to care for.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

I am truly sorry if i come across as rude. I really dont mean to. Anyway, the reason i ask so many questions and seem to deny your answers is that sometimes if my mind is set on something i want it and i will try everything to get it. Also i see where u r coming with the frogs. I didnt like the setup either and it does make sense that it is wrong. However, i was trying to highlight the care tips more. Once iagain i am sorry and i hope u forgive me 4 coming across as rude!

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

Why is it that you continuously ask many questions (which there is nothing wrong with) but continuously deny any answers that are not ideal to you (which there is something wrong with)? You have asked many questions that I have answered which I do not mind at all. But you have constantly rejected my advice and just keep ignoring the proper information. You can not change an animal's requirements to fit your "needs" better. I am not trying to be mean or rude, but you need to either start taking advice or stop asking questions.

Budgett's frogs can never be kept on gravel. That is a recipe for disaster. And Budgett's frogs are almost fully aquatic. Why would a frog that almost never goes on land need a tank that is ninety-five percent land? They need to swim not just soak. The frog can barely fit in the dish. I understand not every store has the amount of space to give every animal an perfectly sized cage (even though they really should) and the cage size is not the real issue. Feeding a food item to a frog that is bigger than the frog itself, e.g. the tadpole, is not okay at all. Even if you think the frog looks "healthy," you do not know how it behaves, eats, or defecates. It also could have just arrived at the store. The care sheet I gave to you is great! It is written by a very experienced Budgett's frog keeper that really knows his stuff. It should provide a great guide to anyone looking to get a Budgett's frog.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

First off that was just a temporary home. Pet stores cant always afford homes large enough 4 everything. And the frog looked like it was thriving. Also the frog was only fed in the water so impaction was not a factor. Im sure if they had the room, the would give the frogs more space. But, again it was just temporary!

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

That web site is NOT good at all. The cage is way too small, has gravel (which will surely cause impaction and kill the frog), and has barely any water. Budgett's frogs need nearly 100 percent aquatic enclosures. They should have about five inches of water with no substrate at all, a powerful filter, a water heater, and (only if you want) a small plant or peice of wood for the frog to climb up onto.

This is a good care sheet.

And here is a great looking Budgett's frog tank.

RE: thinkin of a budget frog

They r great caresheets b/c its an actual pet store.
