leopard gecko feed

Ok, I posted this in another section, now I'll try this one...Lizzy has been raised on crickets and mealworms. There are no mealworms out there,save for the real small ones, which she won't eat. I'm not sure if she's eating the crickets. I have been feeding her super worms, but now they are hard to find. Will she eat earthworms, wigglers, or redworms? Haven't tried waxworms, but I don't want to waste money on feed she's not eating (I have a bunch of small mealies now that I'm stuck with). Any suggestions out there?

I have a chance to get a couple of these, but I want to do more research before I get them. I have been searching the web and I have found very little about these lizards. From what I gather, their care is similar to a bearded dragon, except that their cage requirement is smaller. I'm planning to put them in a tank that is the same foot print as a 20/29 gallon high without the height. The custom tank dimensions are 24"x12"x9". It already has sand, and a UTH, but that only because we found a great deal on a Mexican Red Knee (B.smithi) and the cage was included. The cage is too big for the tarantula and she doesn't need the UTH that it came with.

Also anyone have any experience with the R-Zilla Combo Light Dome? I wouldn't recommend this light for a bearded dragon in a 40 gallon breeder but the tank is only 9" high.

The one thing that is cool about these lizards is that they give live births. Oh yea, they come from the southern part of Texas. Any additional information would be grateful.

Leopard Gecko: Baby Health Help!

I just got a baby Rainwater Albino Leopard Gecko (Chance) about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I have some questions about him/her, please help Chance!

1. Chance does not have any claws. Is it normal for a baby Leopard Gecko to not have claws (then they grow them in) because his is about one month, or did he lose them ALL while shedding?

2. Is it okay to feed his mini-mealworms just running around the cage like crickets? I have paper towels as the substrate.

3. He has this big, blue band going across his mid-abdomen. I can tell it is not a part of his patterns. What could it be?

4. Whenever he accidentally steps into his shallow water dish, he freaks out. Is this normal?

Please help Chance and me!

My beardies are turning 7 months soon, my male is only 7 cm from nose to slit, and female is 6cm from nose to slit. I dont know why they are so tiny. One thery is that I didn't know they needed a UVB blulb and i got that for them two days ago. Please tell me why they are so small.[Their diet consists of crikets, soon to be ocasional wax worms(im getting those soon),and mustard greens with the ocasional fruit and veggies]

A few questions.

Ok, heres the deal. Mom is not really good about listening to direction and opened the egg box to make sure none had hatched....could that kill them? I normally open them once a week every Monday...I was like, flipping out when my mom told me so I just wanted to know.

Also, if/when/regardless if they do hatch I would like to expand and start a larger scale breeding program. My questions are:

What would happen if you, say, crossed a phantom and a sunglow? Would the dominant trait beat out the recessive trait but the recessive trait becomes a HET (I think thats what its called...its like 2 in the morning sooo) so that if crossed with another HET or a full morph of the HET it will become that HET color? Sorry, I donno if that made sense or not

My idea was:

have a 40 gallon breeder with 3-4 females in it...ideally two of a morph, or maybe 1 full morph and one HET morph.

have four 15 gal. breeder (dont even know if they make them) with ideally the same morphs as the females.

have my last shelve reserved for a 20 gal. breeder for a female kenyan sand boa and a 15 gal. breeder for a male. (kind of off-topic but ah well)

Then put my current geckos on top of my rabbit's dog crate cage.

Would this be a good idea?

My morph color choices would be:

-snow gecko
-sunglow gecko
-phantom

possibly high yellow (my current female's morph) or high yellow with HET for tremper albino (my current male's morph)

i put it in their cage and put all the stuff back, then i put samy and tigris in.

samy instantly looked at the liner and climed the side of the cage to the top, but tigris actually likes it better than the brown

do you have any ideas about how to get him to like it enough to walk around on it?

Hey, guys, I haven't been around in a while. I see a few new names in the forums. Hello to all the newbies!

So, If you all remember my post about a month ago about going & helping a frien w/ her leo & the shed problem.....well I now have the leo. My friend called me last night at her witts end w/ this leo, so she gave it to me. It shed again & I see that it still has some stuck on it's feet. I'll work on that tomorrow. But she says it won't eat. I only seen it once before, but I think it might be a little thinner than before. She's still far from being skin & bones. She has tried supers, crix, wax & meal worms. The leo won't touch any of them. Her substrate is vita-sand. She has a hide at both ends of the 20gal long tank. She has been putting a red bulb on at night & a white one on during the day for heat. I read that having the white one on might be a stresser. Is this true? Should I only be using the red one at all times? I'm not sure of the exact temps because she only has one of the sticky gauges in the middle of the tank. That's another thing I have to work on tomorrow. What should the temps be on the hot & cool end? The bottom line is....I'm clueless when it comes to leos & I need some help.

I just got the desember isue of reptiles monthly. And guess what i saw! I saw in the whos who in reptiles part, a guy called bryan fry. He discovered that the saliva has not toxic bactirea but deadly venom. We were wrong!!!!!! This discover is really inconvenent. Becouse of this discovery, books need to be re-writen, theroys are now dead, ets. What do you think?

"Translucent" veiled chameleons

These young "translucent" veiled chameleons Chamaeleo calyptratus were among the many beauties displayed last weekend at the Tampa Herp Show in Florida. Mike Monge of FLChams.com was offering them at his booth. They apear to be losing pigment generally over their whole bodies, but particularly in certain patches. I'm wondering if they'll have any adverse issues in the sun because they lack protective pigments against UV rays???

These were all in the 3 - 4-inch long range, so it will be interesting to see how they look as adults. Here are two of the wildest-looking ones he had....

My beardie jumps out of my lap any chance he gets and tries to play with my dogs, he dosen't hiss or poof out or anything. He actually looks like he's having fun lol I think its because I've had him ever since he was 2 weeks old and he's been raised around the dogs but the sad thing is I can't let him play with them because they are labs and he's just a little guy and I don't want him to get hurt. I think he needs counseling

I have been doing some exparemnts that are almost garentied to both give me respect on this web site and reviutinize owe understanding of herps and help with herpers everwhere. This is one of the three exparemnts.

I am doing a exparement involving my beardie. I am testing his intelgence. By Useing both present and past experences, i will be abile to build a full picture of how intelgent he really is. And this will inturn help build a full picture of the full mental compaity of beardies. So far, i ahve recorded something that is not caritoristic to eadies. Mimicery. When i watch him, i lean on his cage with my arms crossed. And i have taken pictures of him basking while crossing his hands. So, that indicates to me that he figered that it was a survival tatic and mimiced it to get a upper edge. But this exparemnt is not complete. But feel free to respond.

hi everyone my little brother wants to take my leopard gecko, Hanlynn, to pet day next week. he's pretty responsible, so i'm not worried about that. but i am a little worried about her. she's calm and sweet and never gets excited, but i'm wondering how a room of excited 11 and 12 year olds will affect her. will this be too much stress? any advice is appreciated

Conjoined bearded dragons

It seems I've been seeing more than the usual number of physical aberrations in herps lately. This past weekend (Sept. 27 - 28), I saw this 'pair' of Siamese twin bearded dragons at the show in Tampa, Florida. They pair is 4 - 5 months old and thriving, despite being joined at the stomach. The junction looks small, and may involve only skin and not internal organs -- hard to say for sure. I thank Craig Tillem of Gold Coast Reptiles for showing them to me and allowing photos.

Savannah Monitor Cage Plans

Just in case anyone needs plans for a large monitor cage here are some pics of the one we are currently building. We only have the frame built, but it is 8' x 4'. Cage frame is built with 1/2" PVC pipe, 8' x 4' sheet of shower board and 1/2" screws. Sides will be made of 2' x 3' sheets of plexi-glass and top will be made of powder-coated poultry wire.

Unknowledgable people will say that Monitors don't need cages but this could be further from the truth! Savs are not dogs and need help with humidity and constant temperature ranges in order to thermoregulate efficiently. They also need deep substrate in order to dig. Check out "The Savannah Monitor Lizard: The Truth about Varanus exanthematicus" by Daniel Bennett & Ravi Thakoordyal. Daniel Bennett has spent years both in the library and the field doing research on monitors. His book is a must read for any monitor owner!

Need Help Sick Lizard!

Hi, my cousin has a 2-3 year old iguana that has not been acting right for the last 7 days. He hasn't eaten in a week and we have been trying to force him to drink some water. He wont eat on his own so we have been trying to force some fruit puree down him but when we opened his mouth he had a lot of mucus in his mouth and some of it was brown. My cousin took some qutips and tried to clean out his mouth. When we poor water in his mouth it seems to wash a lot of the mucus out. But I am afraid that the mucus is keeping him from swallowing water. I don't know what to do at this point other than take him to a vet. But the only qualified vet that sees reptiles is about 100 miles away and it is hard to work around our work schedule. I know he needs to go to the vet but is there anything we can do right now until we can get him to a vet. I would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks

Meller's Chameleons

I recently acquired two adult male Meller's Chameleons. They are beautiful to say the least. I have them each in their own 65 gl. reptarium. They both eat crickets without hesitation, but when it comes to my Discoid cockroaches, it's a no go. Same thing with super worms. I just don't understand. I am feeding them the right size, I know that, but what the heck? If anyone has suggestions on how to get them on roaches, I would love to hear them.

ok, ever since i learned that iguanas can be taught how to use the litter box, i've been trying to train her to do it ever since she was 12 months! she still doesn't get it, but she is close. when i take her into the bath room, she always does her buisness. she gives me her warning first (the ol' tail wiggle) then i put her in the litter box and she does her thing. i just need to teach her how to do this on her own.

i saw this vid. of and old male (probably 15) going from his favorite basking spot to the litter box, all the way to the other side of the house! he did this ever time so the owners didn't have to clean up the poop on the carpet that's one smart cookie if you ask me

if anyone practices this with their iguana or herp, and are succesful, plz give me some hits on how to make it a daily part of her life. Thanks

I just came back from vacation and my dad and my sister were taking care of the lizards. since they dont have any knowledge about the lizards i left them a specific letter on what to do and i even showed them how to do it. anyway i came back and on of the tw baby chinese water dragons had died. thety said they woke up, looked in the cage and it was " all dried up " they said they misted them like i told them to and put them in there water bowl. The other water dragon is perfectly fine.

what happened? could it have been sick? i dont know if i beleve what they told me. it wouldnt have dried up if they misted it regularly would it?

i don't know what i did wrong. i feed her the night before and then......... wham! the next morning when i look in her cage she is a pale color and is vomitting on site!!!!
