Real wood and rocks?

I am interested in using wood and rocks that I found outside in my leopard gecko's terrarium. Has anyone used these items before? How can I properly sterilize them before use?

The reason I ask is because I want to add more climbing areas to Yoshi's enclosure. I don't have a job, and my husband has to support my hobby. I can't keep spending fifteen dollars or more on things at the pet store.

Savannah monitor cage tutorial?

I've noticed lately that my blizzard Leopard Gecko is developing a yellowish tint on the top of his scales. Its not like its in one concetrated area, its all over. The yellow isn't that noticable, you can only see up close. Is this normal?

i have a 20 month old sav and im looking for people to talk about them with. lol

nothing major, just kinda peves me but my male sav seems to perfer my girlfriend over me. if im holding him he'll be fine... until she comes over, he'll just keep trying to get away from me to get near her. not aggressively he just wiggles and doesnt sit still until hes cuddleing with her. if im letting him roam my room and shes over he'll just climb up a chair or my bed to get to her. just wondering why

Last night I was trying to figure out why Yoshi didn't eat her dinner. I looked inside the humidity hide and discovered why. She was shedding. I am so excited that I finally got to watch my gecko shed! I also got a pic of one of the sheds she didn't eat. Has anyone ever seen their reptile do this?

Recommendations for a new pet.

Hello there, just wanted to get some thoughts on my next pet lizard as snakes are out of the question.

I've kept basic lizards for about 4 years now (mostly leopard geckos) and I am looking at my options for my next new pet. I'd like to here your thoughts on what you think is the best pet lizard. Here are some loose guidelines:

Maximum 6 feet long (nothing to small)
Nothing that needs daily care
Needs to be a sociable species more or less

I think that I want either an Iguana, Monitor Species, Panther Chameleon or a Leachy Gecko. But I would love some new suggestions, or specific species.

My pair of Lined Leaf Tail Geckos came in today, yes! They are simply stunning, 10 times better than I thought that they would be, and alot bigger also. These guys are massive. I have seen the female eat 3 crickets already, and I dont know about the male. They arrived in plastic containers with semi-wet paper towels in them, and no moss-which I dont understand. So I am working on hydrating them, I have the humidity almost up to 90% but with pretty good ventilation. I named them Coco (female) and Puff (male). I will get pictures up soon, they are already stressed enough so pictures today wouldn't have been a good idea.

My one and a half year old male crested geckos' tail fell off today. When I got home from school I saw a tail laying on the ground in the cage. People are working on my roof and its very loud and shakes my wall. Well one of the pieces of bambo in his cage fell and hit him, so he was startled and dropped his tail. I am pretty upset about it. I will watch it closely to make sure no infections form. Has this every happened to anyone else?

Well, there's already a thread for monitors, so why not one for skinks?

I was wondering if anyone else on this forum kept skinks. They seem so uncommon when compared to herps like beardies and leos, but I think they make really interesting pets.

I currently have a Broad-Headed skink (Plestiodon laticeps) named Smaug and I'm hoping to get a female next year to breed with him in 2011. Broad-headed skinks are really uncommon pets and on the entire internet I've only come across 2 other people that have experience with the species. They aren't bred and are rarely kept in captivity. Another uncommon species I'm interested in is the Great Plains skink (Plestiodon obsoletus), which get a bit bigger than broad-heads.

In a couple years, I'd like to get a larger skink, such as a Blue Tongue or Prehensile Tail skink.

OK, I think I've made it obvious that I really like skinks. If you have any skinks, plan to get some, or are just fascinated by them, here's the place to talk about them!

My curly tails used to always be sunning themselves on their log, but lately, they hide in the substrate all the time. One I haven't seen in weeks, but the other I see occasionally. I know they're there because the food disappears. Why are they hiding like this all the time?

My first question is about the phoenix worms, Is it true that you don't have to dust them with the calcium supplement because it already is? My second question is about a prepared food bag for omnivore diets, it claims that all you have to do is add water and feed, does this work? thank you and have a nice day

My leopard gecko is only eating mealworms right now because she is refusing crickets. She needs to eat a better variety of foods. Has anyone successfully tried Zoo Med leopard gecko food? I know leos generally prefer live insects, but I am thinking about trying it.

hey everybody i picked up my uvb bulb friday morning and got it back on rocky, already I've noticed a complete overhaul on his health and I've corrected any dietary/husbandry issues. there was some permanent damage with his back legs (they swelled up a bit and lost 2 toes.) but he can fully operate them without any struggle or discomfort. I know once they've gotten this it usually comes back and hits em again but i feel alot better and sleep alot better knowing he's improving more and more each day and i know if it comes back again ill be ready for it.

Soo my iggy rocky has come down with M.B.D (metabolic bone disease) he's had it for awhile but my uvb bulb has kept it at a minimal threat,but it blew. so i usually give him some natural sun which prevented it for awhile. but the weathers been nasty and unpredictable the past 2 weeks so i couldnt put him outside. he's just been on a normal repti blue heat lamp cause i dont have the 20-70 bucks it takes to get my uvb right now. when he first got sick his jaw swelled out and his back legs ballooned up. although its still an issue in his hind legs his jaw has cleared up. but now even though he's out in the sun 7-10 hours a day (when its nice out) its starting to effect other body parts. he's fed a very nutritious diet. but i woke up today and noticed one toe is completey gone and anothers only still hangin there because his nail is still firmly intact to his foot. i keep him him hydrated and bathe him making sure theres no dead skin bands cutting off circulation in his legs (or anywhere else.) I was told by my auntie (shes an exotic animal vet and has quite an extended collection i can only dream of ever having.) to just keep letting him have basking time in the sun everyday and keep him on a nutritious diet and itll go away. which believe me i know that and do that everday but it keeps comin back to bite me in the A** (didnt wanna cuss and get yelled at theres alotta younger kids on this site) but anyways, im just afraid its all going to mess with my iggy physcologically (not sure if i spelled that right) I'd hate to lose him cause he's such an awesome reptile (no 2 reppys or iggys are the same) Id hate to have to shell out the 50 bucks and start over with a new iggy who (with my luck) would be mean and nasty and absolutely hate being handled. Any suggestions on what to do to help him get better? (im not being an a**hole but dont tell what i already know and dont tell me to do what im already doing.) (I DO NOT AND REPEAT DO NOT have the money for a vet visit and i refuse to take him to my aunts for treatment cause her prices are just as outrageous.)

Fat tailed geckos are very easy to take care of. In fact, i would call them the leos clone. Since they look alike, act alike, and have simmular needs. And there has been talk that this creature can be added to the ever growng list of species capibal of takeing the leos title as worlds best pet gecko. What do you think, do you think they have a chnce or do you think they already have???

Uroplatus ebenaui

I may be getting a pair of Uroplatus ebenaui's. (If I get them) I will separate them and quarantine for 1-3 months, then bring them together. I plan on using paper towels as substrate for quarantining , a few live plants, cork bark, some horizontal branches, along with some leaves for ground cover. Keep them at 70-78 degrees, 75-100% humidity but not soggy, 10 gallon tank, half covered top, low wattage florescent light. What am I missing, is there anything else I need to know?

I am not new to leopard geckos, but one of my babies is acting strange. It is my smallest female; she does this weird burst of energy at about 10:00pm. She just runs around the cage like she can't control herself, and then "attempts" to climb the walls in her terrarium. It is really strange behavior for her. I have had Kiwi for nearly seven months or so.

I don't know what her problem is. I have consulted my book, Herpetocultre of Leopard Geckos, but it really doesn't say anything about her behavior...

She is in a 35-gallon breeder tank (more floor area than that of a reg. 35) and shares it with my other female, Esmerelda. I have not noticed any aggression between the two. She eats great and utilizes her calcium and her moist hide. The temp is at 87 degrees F during the day, with a night time drop of 80-78 degrees F.

Any ideas? I am a little worried, she is my baby...

Crested Gecko Problems

Hi, I got another gecko a month ago, and since I got him at petco he has been a big problem. He is a crested gecko, 8 inches long, male, and 8 months old. When I got him he was eating and all that. When I handled him he did bite me. It didn't really hurt, I just figured it was because my sister was grabbing at him. One the way home he hit his nose of the carrier box try to get at the cricket keeper. He ate 2 crickets at my house, and then it all went downhill. I had to kill the cricket, cut its head of, and then put guts on his lip. He would lick them, and go into a feeding frenzy, biting everything. Buy the time he was done eating, he had pooped everywhere, which leads me to the next issue. He poops when handled. Alot. When removed from his 10 gallon vertical planted terrarium, which he shares with 2 American gree tree frogs, he has usually pooped on you withen 30 seconds. I have a dozen other herps, and I can keep this up much longer. Please comment.
