Reptiles magazine 2009 annual has a great article on Ackies on page 88-95. It is called "Awesome Ackies!" and has a lot of great info.

I would heartily recommend that. The caging and feeding requirements for Ackies are far less than for a Savannah monitor. The upfront cost on an Ackie is higher, but it will even out and cost you less over the long haul. Personality-wise, they are fantastic animals to keep and I don't think you will be disappointed.

One thing to keep in mind is that Ackies are also a burrowing species. You will need some nice deep soil/sand substrate that will hold a burrow. Good luck and have fun.

Don't worry- I'm not about to jump into something I'm not prepared for any time soon. I completely understand what a dedication monitors are. Actually, I'm planning on getting an Ackies monitor instead as my first monitor- I hear that, although they're not as available as Savs, they make great first monitors.

By me 3/4" plywood is like $18 a sheet, I used 6 sheets to build my 8x4x4 enclosure. Plus a couple hinges, and I used a wood framed storm window out of an old screen door for the lid. A $5 fixture, a short drop cord for the lights and that's it other than Water Proof primer and Paint to seal the bottom.

Agreed. If your not able to afford the initial cost of housing a large monitor, you may want to rethink your purchase. Everything else over there lifetime cost a great deal more, vet visits, food, heating and electricity bills... Try calculating those things first and then see if you still want the monitor. Monitors are expensive animals. The $200-$300 you're going to spend on housing the animal is the least of your worries. Try calculating your food bill for a year's time, and the difference will astound you.

We built our for about a $100, but that's because we gutted a HUGE armoire and then built everything in there. It was about 8 feet long by 6 feet wide.

I doubt you could built a proper cage for under $200. I priced materials for a simple snake cage that a friend was going to build and it added up to $370.

For future reference, I'm looking for a specific guide on how to build an inexpensive enclosure for an adult savannah monitor. I'd rather not spend more than $200 on the enclosure, if possible. I'd also like to see photos of your monitor enclosures as well.
