I was cleaning her enclosure and she decided it looked tasty I suppose

RE: Just wondering

This may sound pretty strange, and I wouldn't blame anyone for doubting me, but I had a turtle that could stand on its two hind legs unsupported and beg for food. I had a male - female pair of bog turtles (Clemmys / Glyptemys muhlenbergi) back in the 1970s before they were protected everywhere. They were the most intelligent turtles I've ever kept. They would immediately notice when I entered the room and turn to pay attention to what I was doing. They ate readily from my fingers and were very personable, which led me to 'playing' with them and getting them to follow my fingers holding food. They were closer to true pets than most of the herps I've kept over the years.
Anyway, one day I was feeding them pieces of meat and started letting them chase my fingers across the cage. I had a piece of indoor-outdoor carpet ("Astroturf") as substrate over mesh so it would dry quickly in the 'land' portion of the tank, and it gave them good traction. As I held a piece of beef up, one turtle stretched to reach it. I held the piece just out of reach to see how high it could reach. That's when it dug its rear feet into the carpet and used its tail to form a sort of tripod. First it lifted one front foot up, then the other too. It literally stood up and continued to beg for food. I should stress that it did this without leaning against anything for support; it simply stood upright on a flat surface - un-aided!

I rewarded the turtle for its effort, of course, and found that it would do it from then on with relative ease. I know a few friends must have seen it do that back then, but they probably wouldn't remember it as anything special the way I viewed the unusual balancing feat. That was just about the time I was getting into photography, but recording that event wasn't something that happened back then unfortunately.

A year or so later, I took off traveling the country and had to farm out most of my herps. I loaned that pair of bog turtles to the friend of a friend and never saw them or offspring again. I haven't had a bog turtle since back then. But the next time I ever encounter anyone with some, I'll be sure to see if they've ever witnessed such behavior. I'm not advocating getting bog turtles today just to be able to test such nonsense on new ones, but that remarkable ability that one of mine demonstrated stays etched in my brain to this day.
*** Ooops - I just noticed that this was supposed to be a snake post. Sorry.

RE: Just wondering

my ball bit me at eleven oclock at night after waking up (still lethargic) why because he didnt eat and i had to put him back in his cage and he struck on my thumb and in the morning you could see front fang marks it hurt pretty much for a split second and then he let go

RE: Just wondering

I was holding my grey banded kingsnake and fell asleep and when i woke up her was head in my pocket, body trough my shirt, and tail right next to my face

RE: Just wondering

My ball python, when she missed her mouse, saw my sister through the glass and struck at her.

RE: Just wondering

my red tail would cuddle with the dead rat before eating them-always thought that was funny.

RE: Just wondering

hi bella i was wondering when i would see one of your posts. now, about the snake thing, uhhhhhhhhhhhh, oh yeah once when i was feeding my bp vicky she missed the mouse and grabbed my index finger and wouldent let go!!!! and i didnt want to pry her off cuz i might hurt her teeth. so she gets her entire body off the cage floor and wraps in a big ball around my hand and doesnt let go for a few minuets!!! thank god i was wearing thick, cowhide gloves!!!

oh yea, also, DO NOT try to pour aocohol on a snake when it accidentaly bites you at feeding time unless you have to especaly with a finicky feeder because it will accoicate trying to eat with its mouth hurting. BUT IF YOU HAVE TO BY ALL MEANS DO especaly with large constrictors.

RE: Just wondering

My Ball Python, Winston once ate a hopper sideways O.O"

RE: Just wondering

I wouldn't call this weird, but one day my gopher snake went after a live mouse. It ran underneath the water dish with the snake in hot pursuit. After the mouse dug itself out from underneath the bowl, the snake slammed it into the side of the water bowl and just kept pressing till it was dead. Note that the snake did this by feel. His head was under the water bowl. In the wild gophers kill rodents by pressing them into the walls of their burrows. It was cool to witness this behavior in captivity.

RE: Just wondering

the herptile master (11/25/2008)
My snake keeps biting the pinkie mice on the butt.
You mentioned.

RE: Just wondering

I have a burmese python and a ball python that wag there tails while you hold them

RE: Just wondering

My snake keeps biteing the pinkie mice on the butt.

RE: Just wondering

Mara caught a mouse by the tail and coiled around its head she and Jay like thier heads petted too.
