I have a red foot and the only time he comes out of hidding is to eat or drink.

RE: Concerns about first tortoise.

First off, he is under stress from being new, plus he is a baby, so there is more shyness. Could we have a bit more details like how high the humidity is, what kind of lighting your using, temps, ect.., Did you get him in person and if so was it from a pet store, a show, or a breeder or maybe you got him sight unseen?

RE: Concerns about first tortoise.

Young torts, especially redfoots are shy. These tortoises may be so for years until reaching adulthood. You aren't raising your tortoise right unless you are following Terry's world famous (not kidding you he is one of the most respected Redfoot breeders in the world) care sheets. If this continues you may consider having a vet check him out. Respiratory infections can be very common, so just make sure the humidity levels in the tank are not so high. Also, if you just got him a few days ago, the change in environment could be affecting him. Most animals react in strange ways when the are moved to a new location. Give it some time and if nothing changes then he may be sick...

Concerns about first tortoise.

I just bought my first Tortoise/ Turtle and he/she is a baby red footed tortoise. I have my tank set up right according to what i've red and the diet I'm feeding him is everything i've read too, but all he has done since ive had it for the last three days is borrow into the cypress mulch under one of its hides. The couple times ive picked him up his breathing seems to be heavy, but i dont really know what normal breathing is. His head bobs up and down with each breath a bit and his legs move slightly. Am i just over-reacting or does this seem strange?
