The time machine kept malfunctioning that was supposed to bring me back to the present after releasing that turtle back in the Cretaceous period of Mongolia.
The gamera turtle in both pics is the same stiff plastic model. Yes, I reversed the second pic and changed the angle slightly to make it look more 'active'. The white 'pressure' ring on my friend is real, but from a plastic foot pressed against his hand. A couple of you did your detective work well!

I visited world renown turtle expert Peter Pritchard's C.R.I. (Chelonian Research Institute) in Oveido, Florida and toured the house / museum last year. Peter is a collector of cool turtle stuff from all over the world - what a neat place with oodles of souvenirs, books, skeletons, trivia, etc.! When I saw that model that I think he got in Japan, I couldn't resist a little horsing around. Friend and curator (at the time) Tim Walsh obliged by helping. Apparently this extinct turtle has enjoyed a renewed fascination in Japan due to some cartoons and clever marketing there, thus the toy models at the links you all have listed. The one at the C.R.I. was the most realistic one I've seen yet, though.

I'm glad everyone had fun with it!

RE: Calling all turtle experts.....

the turtle is EXTINCT!! that is a small of a turtle from mongolia in the creatceuos period

RE: Calling all turtle experts.....

Yeah whats up Bill? The only info I could find was fossil findings which makes me think it is a model but if you look at the pics you can notice that all the apendages are in different positions between the two photos, not just reversed but in different positions. You can also see white ring around the point of contact of the rear foot and Mr Love's hand which indicates pressure is being applied. Both of those things can be manipulated and I have seen the crazy Easter Corn so I wouldn't put it past Mr. Love to come up with something like that. When it comes down to it I am stumped!

But boy I hope it is real!

RE: Calling all turtle experts.....

Hmmm....upon further investigation, I see that one of the photos Bill posted is reversed, because the markings on some of the scutes aren't matching up.

After doing some searches for the Latin name Bill gave us, all I'm getting is a bunch of sites in Japanese, and more frequently, sites about prehistoric turtles....which means my original observations may be true, that Bill Love is, in fact, holding a plastic replica of the extinct species Sinemys gamera.

RE: Calling all turtle experts.....

No one has identified this oddity yet??? I own a pair of triporcatus and 16 inch MataMata's and I have seen Giant Asian softshells and pignosed turtles before but this thing takes the cake! From the looks of it they must be from the indo pacific region but thats an easy guess. There cant be too many larger predators with those bright colors. I really wonder what those spikey prongs evolved for. Must be either something that Darwin was talking about or something that just survived through the efforts of that captive breeder.
