The best thing to do is go out at night with a flashlight, be very silent and follow the chirps.

Me and my friends went into their retention pond wearing boots at night and just stood in the middle of it... after a moment of silence and the flashlight turned off, we would hear them start up again...  if you shine the light you can see their throat sacs gleaming... and if you are quick enough you can keep them in your sights and grab them before they dissapear...

we caught more than 30 one night... and boy... were they all happy to be lopped together in a 10 gallon tank... then we released them in the morning... boy was that fun though!  We kept catching them until we didn't hear any more of them.  We caught them ALL!

(we're all girls too... hahahaha)

haha i'm a girl and that is totally something i would have done, when i was a girl we went to girlscout camp and there was a pond and i think there had to have been over a thousand newts and they were all going to the pond and i was sooooooo happy and i kept bringing them inside and the other girls didnt really like it too much and i had to take them all back, they were awesome though, wish i had female friends that liked to do that kinda stuff... luckily my very soon to be hubby is totally cool, he brought me a handful of salamanders last summer to play with for a little while and he helped me rehome a large female bullfrog, she was awesome and i found her on the road and had to move her somewhere so he found a pond and we put her there safely.. and i know she likes it there because a few months ago we went for alot of walks... warm weather, and i could hear soooo many bullfrogs, they were everywhere, at night we could hear them churping, and you could see them if you shone the light on them... they didnt seem to like that though... good luck!

i recomend getting as close to the sound as you can and waiting for something to move, bring a flashlight and a net or a bucket and not being afraid to get wet. They are probably along the edge somewhere well hidden and safe. night vision goggles would be best but not many people have them and fewer want to get them wet... if you hear a splash there are probably a few there.
