Hey all. I'm putting a turtle aquarium together, and I have plenty of various sized terra cotta roofing tiles that I use for my non-aquatic herps.

I was wondering if it's safe to submerge terra cotta pieces in water. Will iron oxide or any other compounds be leached out of the terra cotta, and will this harm the turts?

Will water prep/treatment solutions help?

Thanks for reading!

Finding threads and info that lead me to believe it is safe but I'd still like extra reassurances from the community here. Gonna be keeping juvenile stinkpot musk turtles with terra cotta and I know they're a little more sensitive than adults are. I just want to be positive.

Is one example of saying it's safe.

I have used a terra cotta pot with a hole in the side as a cave for a baby slider before and everything was fine. He seemed to love it and I never had any problems with him.

Awesome, Giggity.

I've had my baby stinkpot almost a month now, and have also been using terra cotta with no problems.

Life is good! He's put on at least a gram of weight already.

If I put the water level even with the top of the pot mine will stay inside the pot and stick is nose out of the water through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Its very cute he can hide yet still get air when needed.
