it is approximately 25 square feet in total with 2 foot sides. I made one end(25 % of the cage) her heated hide. I am always very cautious with any heat source, including heat mats. I use a forest floor type bedding. Watch out for hay or alfalfa because if the critter really gets to digging they can push the grass up into the heat lamp.
I have rescued almost 60 reptiles. Many I choose to go and pick up and I find that most people are really very careless with heat lamps and heat mats. One ball python I cared for, the owner had the large tank sitting directly on the cord to the heat mat. I monitored the heat mat the first weekend and found it was shorting out and reaching over 150 degrees. you cook hamburger to 165!!!
I have a ball python that is part of my education program and she had severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns to almost half of her belly. her owner couldn't treat and relinquished her to me.
Please take cage design and heating very serious.
