Why can't you? They are very closely related.

I would say it depends on the temperament of the geckos. I haven't heard of an AFT X leo but I wouldn't think it was impossible unless they had very different tempers. Maybe people have tried and never gotten good eggs out of it?
Crested geckos and gargoyle geckos, for example, they are very closely related but gargs are way to aggressive to risk breeding with a crested. I have heard people say that they can't even keep two female gargs together they are so territorial and aggressive.

I know of one person who has tried and failed many times to breed leos to fat tailed geckos.
Jsin. - 'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.'
- Abraham Lincoln, (attributed)
16th president of US (1809 - 1865)

Leopard geckos and fat tailed geckos are not closely related at all. Just because they have a similar body shape doesn't mean that at all! Also, they come from different parts of the world and have different care requirements.
They cannot interbreed.
There are some species of geckos that can interbreed such as crested geckos and chahoas. A lot of people look down of mixing species this way because it "dirties" up the blood lines. Some people think they look cool and do it anyway.

Sorry Dislatecola, I checked in a couple of the gecko books I have and you were right. I just know I read it in a book, but it must have had wrong info. Thanks for clearing me up!
