It was my fault for reaching in the cage near feeding time...stupid me. Anyways, our 8' albino Burm is hungry, and I now have a very painful, and very accurate impression of both rows of top teeth, and bottom row. I only count 67 holes, but I'm pretty sure there's more than that. Luckily, my boyfriend was here to unwrap him from my arm. Monty was insistant that my hand was a rat, and took a very long time to let go. We used a Safeway card to pry off his lower jaw, then just had to coax him off. His upper jaw was locked across the palm of my hand, and his lower wrapped around the back of my hand, across the pinky knuckle. (Yes, the knuckle punctures HURT). As soon as he was free, while I'm in my state of needle-puncture-shock (which I get if I go get a vaccine or piercing), I ask 'is Monty ok?' I was actually, and honestly, more concerned about his well-being than mine. Even while I'm getting my hand scrubbed and hydrogen-peroxided, I'm thinking about how I hoped Monty didn't lose any teeth or get a bruise from when I gripped him. It took him some time to reconnect his jaw, though.

To get to my point, always use care with any snake, big or small. If you're still living at home with mom and dad, you gotta think about if your parents would unwind your snake from your arm or leg. NEVER get complacent!! If Monty had been an 18' instead of 8', we would've been pulling my ARM out of his mouth!!

This is exactly why I choose not to own giant constrictors. It just goes to show you that no matter how "tame" any snake is, they still have a tiny snake brain and their instincts will take over. We all get too comfortable.

Have you tried touching him with a hook or a role of paper towels to let him know it's not time to eat?

As Ratsnake said Hook "training" can be very beneficial and possibly prevent this type of thing. It's not a sure fire way to end feed strikes at you and not the prey but it helps.
With any animal you keep close to you your bound to get bit at some point, the cardinal rule with hots and large snakes is to never go in alone! Good thing you had someone around to help you out!
Also if you don't have any alcohol around you should get a bottle and keep it in there, makes the snakes release almost immediately and seems to make it easier to unwrap them as they just want to get away from the terrible taste.

We do have a hook, and we're starting to use it. Normally, it's reserved for our new pissy yellow anaconda, but I'm hanging it up on the burm cage. The bite has made me even more fascinated about snakes, especially pythons (I didn' think it was even possible). For a day or two, I'll get to carry around my painful, yet completely awesome, bite-impression reminder. I completely take the blame. We do have alcohol that we keep nearby, but with both of us with our hands full, we couldn't get to it. We do also keep a military kabar on top of the cage, just in case. We really do hope it never gets that far, but if they refuse to let go, and someone's life depends on it, we will use it.

I'll never forget the velcro-ripping sound I heard when we peeled him off. Ugh. I love my snakes.

Well, it's healing fast, but is itching like crazy. That would be cool to have a wound section, but alot of people that should see it wouldn't. I can upload pics as soon as I get them off my phone.
