are the bait shop worms from Cabelas, Gander Mountain, or Bass pro shops, and gas stations safe for reptiles? i'm a big fisherman and use all sorts of backyard crickets, mealworms, waxworms, and night crawlers for FISH. i have not used them for my reptiles.
my question is are they safe for reptile consumption? i have NOT fed bait shop worms to my reptiles. i'm just curious. are there any hidden parasites or something?

Avoid red wigglers. Nightcrawlers should be alright, as the bait shops get them from the same places the pet shops do. Is there a chance of parasites? Of course, but there is with any insect. Crickets are a huge vector for a lot of parasites.

thanks for the tip. i use crickets from the pet store for my reptiles. but i collect what i call "rock hoppers" since they are grey or brown in coloration and hang out in rocks in my yard. i use the backyard crickets for when i go fishing.

so the worms should be safe for my reptiles? i just buy mine at petco or a chain pet store since they give me good deals

They secrete a yellow, bitter liquid when bitten (or threaded on a hook) that reptiles and amphibians don't find appetizing. You can cut red wigglers up and wash them to get rid of most of the foul tasting stuff, but I would just avoid them.

okay thanks =) i will possibly try this next time i go fishing and keep a few left overs for my reptiles. its just iffy buying worms online. some reptile sites charge like $20-$30 for shipping alone. bass pro shops sells a case of 500 waxworms for $21 +$5.50 shipping but it takes 1-2 weeks to arrive versus the next day $30 shipping.
