Depends on the size of the turtle in question. Small turtles, a small set of human nail clippers will suffice. Larger turtles, a pair of dog nail trimmers will work. Just look carefully at the nail--when you cut the nail, be careful not to cut the dark area at the base of the nail. Cut this, your turtle will bleed, it is the exact same thing as the "quick" in dogs and cats.

i love turtles and tortoises (1/1/2012)

Styptic powder although I think I've heard of people using corn starch. They make safety clippers for dogs that have a guard in them so you don't cut too far down. Also you could possibly use a dremel and grind them. I've had to do that with my tortoises beak in the past.

3.2 Bearded Dragons (Spyro, Gyra, Smaug, Lyra & Alicia Rose)
1.2 Gold Dust Day Geckos (Krypto, Fluora and Rubi)
1.1 Frilled Lizards (Sam & Jess)
0.0.1 Sulcata (Rigby)
0.1 Veiled Chameleon (Radiya Jabeen)

Use styptic powder, not corn starch or flour or powdered sugar. While all the last three will stop the bleeding (pretty well), they are easily digested by bacteria and will give some nasty stuff a breeding ground with a direct pipeline to your animals' bloodstream. Styptic powder has antiseptic qualities, use it.

thank you, my mom said we have some styptic powder somewhere and when she was looking for it she found a dog nail file, and she told me it would probably be fine to use that (it needs cleaning up though) and (after it is cleaned up of course) i wanted to make sure it is OK before i use it, so is it?

A file would work OK, you'll just have to be patient with it, as your animal will not be very cooperative.
