My problem with UTHs is that I had the worst time dialing in a constant temperature. The depth of the substrate, and the positioning of the probe changed the temps constantly, so I gace up.  With a substrate temp of 85, the cage floor was too hot to the touch. No thanks.

I think that overhead heat with radiant heat panels is superior to any heating method.  With a heat panel, you get even, penetrating, heat and the ability to make temperature gradients by adding stacks of wood, branches, cork or rock under the panel.

I like flexwatt better. I'm only using it in my yearling rosy boa's plastic tub because it's the only option.

I just bought one of those Terrarium heaters. At first I had it underneath, cause our tank is also on a dresser type piece. Then in the directions it reccomended that when used with wooden pieces it's best to mount the heater on the side. So that's what I did for our Water Dragon.

Honestly, I am not to sure those heaters  works that well, I might end up going to a Ceramick Heating bulb for at night.

Following up on this thread with an update - our temps have been great since we added the controller. We'd been using paper as the liner for the first month; now we've added the aspen bedding on top of terrarium liner and things are still stable.
