I just want to say it has been an honor chatting with you folks here on RM!  Just in case I get tagged with my Atrox, and they throw a toe-tag on me.  See there, I understand completely the serious consequences of owning a hot.

If there is'nt 100% accuracy your dead or close to it.  That said it is very rewarding and taboo to own something so dangerous and alive.  That means it can get out and make its way into your shoe, just waiting to say Aloha(hello and goodbye) to you.  I do have an Albino which is very bright yellow and white, not that it makes a difference in lethal injection.  However, atleast it wouldnt have that element of camoflauge or cryptic patterning if escaped, right!?  I wont count on that as much, as religiously locking and checking the cage.  The first week I couldnt sleep well at night, I'd keep waking up to check the lock!  Heh cant be too cautious with a venomous in the house!

Bite that!

 My main problem with hots is that even the most experienced keepers can loose focus and get nailed. How many of us have changed a water bowl after handling mice or left a cage unlocked. My Childrens python is the most docile snake I have ever seen, and she bit me when my hand passed in front of her hide. That was the last thing I would expect from her. If that happens with a gaboon viper, you're toast.  The dude who owns the Kentucky Reptile Zoo has horrible hands from being bitten. So does Bill Hast of the Miami Serpantarium, and these guys are pros. The question is not if you will be bitten, but when you will be bitten. That being said, I give you hot keepers out there props for being so brave. It's bad enough that I could get killed driving to the store> I wouldn't want to risk death from my pets.

1 Sandiego Gophersnake (Loki}
1 western hognose{Lilith}
1 everglades ratsnake{Gypsy)
1 Children's python {Delilah}
1 Mexican black kingsnake ( Corona)
1 Bull snake (Toro)

 2 Crested geckos (Merlin and Jezebell)

but there is a huge difference between getting bit by a children's python and a gaboon. For one you won't be sticking your hand in a gaboons' cage.........from what I see with these pros (which most are good guys) they get complacent. Of course complacency and hots don't mix. Which is exactly why they've been bit more than once. If you go on the SHHS site which nearly everyone on there owns venomous, many of them have yet to get bit and they've been keeping for a good amount of years. The way I see it, the risk is huge and it is very present, but it is up to the handler/keeper to not get bit. We are humans, we're evolved, surely we can outsmart a snake..........some may not because they lack common sense. I get the impression that everyone thinks if you get into venomous or keep them, that you ARE GOING to get bit. they say there are two kinds of venomous keepers, the ones who have been bit and the ones who will. Like I said there are many who have been and many who will be but it's not a sure thing if you are smart about it and don't cut corners. Having a "hands off" policy works well too. Why use hands when you can use tools. I hate when hots are referenced as "pets" because they aren't to the ones who are serious and do the right thing and for the right reasons when it comes to venomous. Consider them zoological specimens.

to add on to MDC's original post mentioning Al Coritz and Ray Hunter they are both really cool guys you can learn a lot from them. I've talked to Ray more than I have Al though.

This is a little off topic but 80% of people hospitalized with venomous snake bites were using drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

Don't drink and handle people!

There are more bites from humans to each other than there are snake bites IMHO.  Not as leathal but much more painful, ask my wife!

Bite that!
