No don't watch Corwin and go out and do what he does! and also don't get trained under somone who's only been keeping for a few months it's much safer if you do it under somone who has had years of experience. I doubt someone will train a 5th grader so you got a while to wait.

Luv*Orville (5/26/2008) ohh geez....jeff corwin catches snakes alot. maybe watch his shows? Jeff Corwin doesn't catch his own snakes. While he may have a master in conservation, he is hardly a Zoologist/herpetologist, and not the best model around. He's just TV eye candy. I'd try one of the unsung heroes of Herpetology ( professors and grad students) at your local Universities. I'm still amazed Jeff isn't dead yet. Guess he doesn't scuba much....

Just an FYI. Steve Irwin did a show here in Arizona about venomous reptiles of the Sonoran Desert. During the show you see him squatting and there is a rattlesnake slithering between his legs just inches from his crotch. I was informed by local herpers that the producers for that show used snakes from their collection and that the majority of the snakes used were venomoids. These herpers are very reliable people and I trust the information they gave me as fact. It may be true that Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin have/had great reputations as having contributed to the conservation of the worlds animals, but they are/were just actors in these programs and the producers are not going to allow them to risk injuries for simple ratings. Now to those of you who want to catch hot snakes. Find someone who has had years of experience herping hots and is willing to show you the ropes. Never go herping alone (always have a second set of eyes, hands and ears with you.) And most important, never handle hots if you cannot totally focus on the animal you are handling. I presently have six rattlesnakes and anytime I am working with them, weather I'm cleaning cages, feeding, or transfering them into a new cage, my wife is along side of me with a snake hook watching and relaying every movement the snake makes. One bite could cost you many thousands of dollars in medical bills and months of recovery.

Wow, 4 west. Diamonds. They must be alot of fun. A mohav and a black tailed too. We only have C. horridus, the timbers out in my area of Texas. I thought about keeping some hots, but Chris and I were thinking of children on down the line, and Hots probably aren't a good growing up environment for young kids. But you give great advise on the field herping. I do the buddy system on almost all my field work, herping or decapodding, so it's second nature to me I thought it was common sense to go hunting with a friend or two.Well, another nugget of knowledge, go out and buy an up to date field guide for your area and memorize the local Hots and Nots (mimics and similars.) Don't want to be afraid oa a Nerodia spp., but don't want to grab a A. picivorus thinking it's just a water snake.

Thanks. We have three adopted children ages 7-9-and 11. Any time we work with the hots the kids are sent to another part of the house and we are in the room alone. They are not allowed back into the room or any wear near the room until the cages are re-locked and they are given the OK to return. They do help with the feeding of the other snakes. The 7yo has her own BP and the boys have their corns. The chances of accidents with the children are less likely to happen if they are properly educated.

I think it's great that you educate your children in herpeculturation. Even better that you adopted what sound to be three lovely angels. Well, Chris and I have grad school and jobs to worry about, so when we have children, we worry about that toddler age of 2-4, where they love to run around and get into trouble. WE can always wait for Hots when they are older, might even get some mild hots, like European fire salamanders.
