best advice ive ever herd in regards to practicing to handle hots is to get a really pissed off rat snake and practice with that. try not to stress it out too much but its a good way to get the feel.

I agree with everyone here don't do it! I got a chance to work with Rob Carmichael from the Wildlife Nature Center in Lake forest, IL on a show at a museum out here. The show was called "I like Spiders and Snakes Weekend". He has been on a show on Animal Planet and CBS morning show. Hubby and I did the spider portion of the show and Rob did the venomous snakes. Unless you are with someone that is trained don't do it. He never travels anywhere without anti-venom. He told us stories of some of the venomous snakes that they have had to rescue as well. When we went to his faculity he gave us the behind the scene tour of the place and I have to say I have much greater respect for venomous snakes then I did before and the people who handle them.

Ok,let's ignore the fact that it could actually kill you and move on to the to something else.Never grab it's tail for it'll swing up and bite you. But,just don't do it.Leave it to the pros

And Austin Stevens is not a Pro. He's a lucky idiot with a very nice camera.

I didn't mean Austin Stevens or Jeff Corwin or those TV guys.I ment the real herp experts that went to college and studied herps in college and catch hots and or reasurch them for a living.

i agree with all the smart herp. ppl on here. i captured a rattler once in my life and never grab it by the tail FYI. im not going to say how i got it either or u might use my tecnique to get yourself killed! i was really dumb the first time i did it but that was to protect my horses form his potent venom. i never try to catch one just to catch it to look at it or disturb it. only that one time. NEVER CATCH VENIMOUS SNAKES EVER!!! unless u where taught extremly well by a professor at an academy.
