who got you started in herps, and what was your first herp?

my uncle got me into herps and herp keeping, he got a cali kingsnake when i was little. that just sparked my interest in herps. now he owns 5 snakes and a dog. my first herp was a $7 CB occelated skink baby from our local pet shop who's trio of imports bred.

My Kids:

1.0 Anery Cornsnake  (Fabrizio)
?.? Savannah Monitor  (Dino)
0.1 High Yellow Leopard Gecko  (No Name)
0.1 Albino Leopard Gecko  (Juanita)
0.1 African Fat-Tailed Gecko  (No Name)
?.? Eastern Tiger Salamander  (Chestnut)

If I hit the lottery, the first "investment" I would get is a breeding pair or trio of green or blue tree monitors, with cage, lighting, plants, etc.

I just grew up loving animals. I worked in a lot of rescues and used to catch frogs and snakes and snapping turtles growing up. I spent a lot of time studying them because my dad told me I couldn't get a pet unless I researched it first. I started researching snakes to see which one I liked best then moved to lizards then turtles and torts I've been researching them ever since. When the librarian noticed everything I was studying she asked if I would take her sons anoles since he wasn't caring for them anymore....that was my first rescue/adoption and I've been doing it every since. That was a little more than 15 years ago.

***Having a pet is like having a child. You don't own them but you are responsible for loving them and caring for them for life. You can't truely own a companion.***

My husband got me into them. We had various amphibians after we got married. Then he got a leopard gecko and it escaped. It was lose in the apartment for 8 months. We thought that it had died. Then one night after the landlord turned off the heat for the year I was half sleeping and guess who decided to cuddle up to me because she was cold? Yep it was our long lost gecko. After that we had a colony of geckos for awhile. We also had a sand boa.

Then for along time we didn't have any reptiles. All this time I wasn't a real reptile fan. I had nothing to do with snakes because I was afraid of them. A year and a half ago I started working at a pet store and my husband talked me into a bearded dragon. Buddy our beardie is great. A few months later I became the reptile and aquatics specialist. That is because the other guy up and quit. I knew that the snakes at the time hadn't eaten in at least two weeks, I had to feed them. So I faced my fear and feed them. Six month later, we saw the viper geckos and I fell in love with them. I came home and did my research and I went backed to get my 5 little piggies. This past Christmas my 16 year old asked for a snake. He didn't care which snake he just wanted a snake. I did some research and I decided on a Sinaloan milksnake. I showed him a picture and gave a book on it and after reading thought that it was the snake he wanted. We have 46 tarantulas and a Pac-man frog now.

Bearded Dragon
5 Viper Geckos
Sinaloan Milksnake
82 Tarantulas and counting
Albino Pacman Frog
4 Birds
dwarf hamster
Male Betta
Baby red devil/Midas cichlids
7 gallon nano reef tank
125 gallon freshwater tank.

Dinosaurs. Cliche, I know. And besides Birds, the reptiles of Sauropsida are the only living family members. My grandmother got me some fire-bellied newts when I was 6, and I was always catching green anoles and Mediterranean Geckos. Chris was also an avid dino lover as a child, but he had red-ear sliders at 5 and was even breeding. When we met, we combined our collections, and started breeding projects as a hobby we could do together.

Rest in Peace Odin!!!  Your life may have not meant anything to those that abused you; but you meant everything to me.  You will be missed my little friend.

2.2  Savannah Monitors (Loki, Freya, Saga, Thor)
0.1  Albino California Kingsnake (Rin)
1.0  California Aberrant Kingsnake (Haku)

1.1  Three-toed Box Turtles (Bowser, Genba)
1.0  Red-Ear Slider (Iggy)
0.1  Snow Corn Snake (Sakura)
0.1  Sulcata Tortoise (Casca)

Megan, you have 3 sugar gliders?  They are awesome, but illegal in my state.  So once I move out I am getting one!

I have always loved animals, but especially herps.  By the time I was in first grade, I knew I wanted to be a herpetologist.  As a little kid I caught hatchling pine snakes, toads, leopard frogs, five lined skinks, green and brown anoles, golden skinks, and a lot of other things.  But when I was in fourth grade (after 6 months of convincing and research) I got my first herp, my now 3 year old female leopard gecko.  My mom HATED reptiles and Oz at first, but after a while my mom started to like her (she won't touch her).  And now my mom likes Oz so much (still won't touch her) that she is letting me get another lizard, a Crested Gecko.  I am doing research on them.

Sometimes my parents and brother get mad because I talk about reptiles just a little too much .  But they will have to listen to it anyway!  Wow.  This was a long post.

My user name was previously FastFoward5k, I just changed it to my new one.

0.2.0 Leopard Geckos
1.0.0 Crested Gecko
1.0.0 Chinese Hamster
2.0.0 Bettas

Coming soon:
0.2.0 Pictus Geckos (Oct. 25)
1.0.0 Bearded Dragon (Jan. 10)
0.1.0 Indonesian White's Treefrog (Jan. 10)
