Actually you should have a mixture of both. You can have a dry/sand area and then the moist area. Another way is to mix the two together. Also make sure you have plenty of things they can climb on or in. They are a social animal despite the name HERMIT crabs. Make sure you also have extra shells for them to switch into. Good Luck.

make sure to offer 2-3 shells for each crab. painted shells arent really that good for them either. The humidity needs to be high so id keep the substrate somewhat moist. also make sure u give them little baths once a week as to clean out substrate from their shells.
