| A snake owner told me you needed to wash your hands before handling snakes, particularly when they are babies. is this necessary?

Humans are incredibly dirty animals. I wash my hands a lot during the day, and even use antibacterial lotion from time to time. Thing to watch though, if you are washing before handling, is to throughly wash the soap off your hands.

tyler (9/11/2008) yes. you should always do this before handling ur pets. also this helps prevent confussion on your snakes perhalf. they might smell their dinner on your hands and strike your hand thinking it was a rat or something else That's a good point. But like everyone else said you should wash you hands after touching any animal weather it is a reptile, small animal or a dog. You can pick up salmonella from a human as well as from an animal.
