Every year my dad goes to Santa Barbara and sometimes he brings back an Aphnophelma. Does anybody know how to care for these tarantulas.

Current Collection
1.0 Rhacodactylus Ciliatus (Atua)
R.I.P.
Rhacodactylus Ciliatus (Bottecelli)
Aphonopelma eutylenum(Grape)

Are these wild caught? Aphonopelma is only one part of the scientific name. If you can post a picture I might be able to help you more. We have 53 tarantulas. This is the list of our Aphonopelmas.

01) A. brockelhursti      Giant Black and White
02) A. chalcodes          Desert Blonde
03) A. hentzi               Oklahoma Brown                                                                                         04) A. moderatum        Rio Grand Gold                                                                                          05) A. seemani            Costa Rican Zebra

Then there is the Flagstaff Orange that is also in the Aphonopelma family as well.  For most of them a shoe box size critter keeper is all you need for a large one, a smaller container if it is fairly small. Of the five we have, only the A. seemani needs a deep substrate of coco fibers. She digs tunnels and her set up has a little more humidity then the others. The others have about a half of inch to an inch coco fibers( but you can have it deeper), a water dish if it is larger, (if it is a sling just wet an area of the container) and a hide. Normal house temps are usually fine. Once a week feed an appropriate size cricket. That's it.

Bearded Dragon
5 Viper Geckos
Sinaloan Milksnake
82 Tarantulas and counting
Albino Pacman Frog
4 Birds
dwarf hamster
Male Betta
Baby red devil/Midas cichlids
7 gallon nano reef tank
125 gallon freshwater tank.

Could be a Carlsbad green (Aphonopelma sp) or  California ebony (Aphonopelma eutylenum). The care is the same. A shoe box size critter cage, a hide, a water dish and coco fiber(EcoEarth, forest bedding) on the dry side. They don't like it really moist. Feed a cricket or two once a week and if they don't eat the cricket within 24 hours take out the cricket so that it doesn't hurt the tarantula. That's all that is too it.

This is the California ebony
