| I dont know yet if my hermit crab has died or just molted it just looks freaky part of the hermit crab is in it's shell and part of the hermit crab is not in it's shell. time will tell me i guess what should i do?

No, they usually stink like shellfish. Down here in the Gulf of Mexico, almost every shell is infested with Clibanarius vittatus, the green striped hermit. These lil buggers are not your big Caribbean land crabs (purple claws) or your strawberries, greens don't last more than a couple of hours out of total water submersion. A lot of people come down, shell collect (lots of moon snail shells) not knowing there's a little hermit crab inside, and on the car ride home, the crab dies and stinks up the place.
Long story short, no, not like dead reptile, but yes they do stink.Signs, well, what do these "parts not in the shell"? Are you saying that the hermit is half in and out and not moving? Or are you seeing a ghostly exoskeleton shed?

Everything in the shell looks like a crab except that it's completely white. When I cleaned up the molting, it was just skin. There were no solid body parts. I haven't smelled anything unusual. It doesn't stink in the aquarium. I bought my crabs from Petco, and they were only labeled as hermit crabs. I don't know what kind they are, but I'm sure that they are not strawberry hermit crabs. I will update the thread after I go feed the crabs some Romaine lettuce and check on them.

Alright. Well, most pet chains and small stores sell the "purple claws" or Caribbean Land hermit crab. They need moderate water for drinking and refreshing book gills. How big is he compared to his shell? Some crabs are able to retreat pretty far in the shell, so he may still be fine. I hope so. Well, time will tell.

| well i found out that my hermit crab molted and did not die. but i did not know at first what happened to my hermit crab! how do you post pictures on messages?
