My first herp was a leopard gecko named spike. My mom ordered him for me for xmas from a very reputable breeder when I was like 5. I loved him to death. He later died of impaction, despite the $500 enema that my parents payed for. I was balling my eyes out. Then I got a box turtle named Sleepy. I was probably about 7 at the time. I feel terrible about this time period because I kind of lost interest in herps. I was young and I didnt really understand that I was the person that kept him alive. He wound up going to a lady in vermont that rescued all sorts of animals and was actually looking to get an eastern box. I am much older now and I have a small collection of herps. I try to stay involved on line and I provide for them daily. Like I said I feel really guilty about that whole time period even though i was just a kid. I did learn from it though and I will never let that happen again.

My first was also a leo, named Skittles. He had to be euthanised due to sand mishap (he literally pooped his insides out).   My next was another leo named Skittles II. That little guy made the move from CO to AZ, and was adopted to a friend who fell in love with him. I didn't get another reptile for a while, and now I have a few more...

my first herps when i was about 9 or 10 they were two baby painted turtles. a mother turtle had laid a clutch of eggs in our back yard and when they hatched we picked up two of them i had no idea how care for them and so i did not give them any heat and they died after about a month then i didn't get any more herps for a while until i was about 14 when i replied to a magazine add offering a pair of "amazing chameleons" which turned out to be just a pair of green anoles.... and the rest is history

My first herps were box turtles, garter snakes, and salamanders we found as little kids . We kept them each summer then released them back where we found them each august. My 1st permanent guest was a captive bred blue stripe garter snake I got as a 3 inch 2 week old baby. I had "Mary" for 12 years before she passed away. My dream herps are the smallish tortoises and bearded dragons. I just got my 1st beardie 6 months ago and he is a great pet!

My first herp was also my first rescue - my first Leo, Pogo. He hadnt been fed for two months and was in awful shape. Nursing him back to help fired my passion for reptile rescue - and i have been running a herp rescue out of my house ever since (that was about 10yrs ago). I still have Pogo too - of course!

My reptile wish list is PAGES...but the top of the list right now is a Red Tegu. I had a Tegu for awhile but when my ex-fiance and i split up he took him

Like at least two of the responders so far, my first herp pet was an eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) that was found in my yard in Morgan (Middlesex County), NJ.  I was probably about 5 years old.  My godfather must have heard about my fascination and soon afterward picked another one up on the road and gave it to me.  I used to keep them in a handy 'pen' which was actually the window well of a basement window of the house.  Both turtles managed to climb up at the bricked corners and escape, necessitating a makeshift metal mesh cover that never quite fit right and always managed to get slid aside and allow them to escape again.  It's pretty funny to think back now and recall what a major dilemma in herp husbandry that was to me then.
