| Someone recently asked me, "Would you ever keep a venomous snake?". Good question. I'm not very sure, but it'll be interesting to see what others think about keeping hots (I suppose that gila monsters and beaded lizards could be included but don't tell anyone, were in the snake stuff section).

Most people in this hobby don't stay static. Most of the time you're either adding to the collection, downsizing or cycling through some - or a Lot - of species to find and decide what seems to be the best fit, for your keeping style and personal likes/dislikes.
Beginning, amateur snake-keepers often go through an initial, growth phase in this hobby of 'Meaner - Bigger - Rarer - then finally arrive at, Hot. (By 'amateur', I mean someone who isn't paid to conduct scientific level snake studies, or isn't paid to maintain a business' or public display's snake exhibit(s)......).
And besides, some people just seem to need that little extra 'buzz' that goes with keeping an animal, that can - and will - kill you, if it gets the opportunity. Don't get me wrong on this: I LOVE checking out nicely kept Hot snakes, in elaborately displayed and very natural looking, public exhibits. The Gaboon Viper is my all-time personal favorite venomous snake, actually...... But, the idea of keeping Hot snakes of my own though, just never seemed to really 'blow up my skirt', I guess.......
Nope. No signature for me today, thanks.....

I really love vipers and wouldn't mind working with them at all (or any venomous reptile) but keeping them in a personal collection...probably not.

I would love to keep either a feathered bush viper or an eyelash pit viper someday. I plan on moving to california in the near future though so I dont know if i would risk breaking the law like that. It would really suck if something went wrong.
When people who dont have enough experience do it and mess up it gives the hobby a bad name. I would only keep hots after years of working with various other species.

Well, I was watching somthing on discovery chanel about venomous snakes and a person who worked in a venomous snake display said that venomous snakes are not recomended as pets. In my honest opinion, I don't think someone should keep a agressive animal that can kill. I think poision frogs are ok because the poisin can be simply washed. But a snake bite needs serious medical care, so I would rather stay on the safe side and not get a poisones snake.

Well if I ever come across another Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake again, I would keep it! But only because of it's small size, I had one for about 2 weeks once, I was holding it for a friend.

SNAKE CHARMER (9/20/2008) when i move out i'm getting a monocled cobra A couple of questions. How old are you and when are you planning on moving out? Are you apprenticing with an experienced handler of hot snakes that would prepare you for dealing with a cobra, or are you planning to? You have to buy a house, where you can have a sealed room because keeping a cobra in an apartment can be a danger to others. I'm not trying to start anything, just curious, because you didn't elaborate in your post.
