Ratsnake (9/22/2008)
[quote][b]] A couple of questions. How old are you and when are you planning on moving out? Are you apprenticing with an experienced handler of hot snakes that would prepare you for dealing with a cobra, or are you planning to?  You have to buy a house, where you can have a sealed room because keeping a cobra in an apartment can be a danger to others. I'm not trying to start anything, just curious, because you didn't elaborate in your post.

i'm 13 now dec,25th is my birthday i'll probably move out soon after college then i'll get my exotic pet shop up & running & the manager down at the pet store i go to has degrees in herpetology & has handled about every snake there is rear fanged snakes sometimes end up in his shop hes taught me alot but,its not really an apprenticeship & i'll probably just live in my pet shop as for caging i'll ofcourse use locks & i plan on looking for anti venom at the "rain forest" in pigeon forge they have a colony of monocleds i've already done alittle reasearch but, right now i'm more focused on starting a colombian breeding project

If I were to ever get a hot snake, it would be an eyelash viper. Rattlesnakes are cool to, but aboreal vipers are the best.

I have to agree with most of the other people who posted. Venomous snakes are one of my favorite animals to see in zoos and other exhibits, but I don't think I would feel comfortable keeping one. When my dad used to work for Fish and Game near Fresno, CA, he came across a guy that had so many tanks stacked head high with rattlesnakes in his garage that you had to walk sideways to move around. Thats just crazy.

Do you know if it was part of a breeding project or something, or were they just pets?

But yeah, thats a little overboard.

Actually, now that you mention it, the guy was doing some personal study about rattlesnakes, but that's still a lot of snakes. All I'll say is hopefully an earthquake doesn't hit near there!

Personally I think snakes are awesome creatures and I know this is going to sound strange, but I really don't like them. I did overcome my irrational fear of them by working for a pet store and we now own a milk snake. While doing a show with a museum about spiders (that's hubby and I) and venomous snakes (Rob Carmichael), I learned so much. We even visited his facility and learned even more. They are a creature that should be respected and left to very experienced people. I would never own a venomous snake for a few reasons. One, I think it is irresponsible to own a venomous snake and not have the proper anti-venom. Two even though I love lions and tigers, I would never own one of those either. Three, after seeing a professional handle a albino monocle cobra and a green mamba, I will pass. They made it look easy but by not means was it easy. The green mamba was so quick.

Bearded Dragon
5 Viper Geckos
Sinaloan Milksnake
82 Tarantulas and counting
Albino Pacman Frog
4 Birds

Male Betta
Baby red devil/Midas cichlids
7 gallon nano reef tank
125 gallon freshwater tank.

I plan on keeping eventually. I'm also a huge arboreal viper fan especially Atheris vipers (bush vipers). I've found thats theres two groups of keepers the ones who want to keep hots and the ones who dont. Don't think I've ever seen someone whos in between.
