| I have 2 bearded dragons and they eat like crazy. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to breed crickets and what is involved in doing so?

you can buy 2 20 gallon tupperware containers and buy around 100 to 150 crickets and put them in the container and put small cups of dirt in the container and leave it there about a day and then move the dirt to the other container and they will hatch in about 2 weeks

it is extremely difficult and time consuming, not to mention stinky as all hell. Cockroaches are a much better plan. They breed easily, don't bite, don't make noise, low maintenance, and most species don't fly or climb.
I keep a colony of discoid or false deaths head roaches. They don't but or climb or fly and they are prolific breeders.

| I have a few large rubbermade tubs that I use for holding crickets. They each have have a few inches of moist coconut fiber on the bottom and egg cartons to hid in. The coconut fiber makes a great egg laying substrate and eliminates the odor problem (it sounds impossible, but it is true) as well as providing a safe, fungus free water source. I started out by putting about 250 crickets in each tub. I use crickets from only one tub at a time, I use about a dozen a day. By the time I have used all of the adults from the tub a close examination will reveal hundreds of tiny babies. You will then move to the next tub. By the time you finnish with the last tub the babies in the first should be large enough to eat. It may be a little costly setting up, $50-$75, but in the long run it is easier and cheaper than going to the store constantly and buying them. Good luck,

| How many tubs do you use? 2? How long does it usually take to get through one tub of 150 adult crickets? I use about 1,000 crickets in three weeks and have been dying to try to breed them. Some of my babies eat 3 week old crickets others adult (prewing) size. What size tub? 20 gal? What do you use for a top?

I've always wanted to breed crickets. Whenever I try, I always fail. But then they always breed in my beardies enclosure...

I use the original top with a large hole cut in the middle. The crickets can not climb up the sides or jump high enough to get out. It takes me just over two weeks to use up the tub of 250 crickets.
