First let me start off by saying hello and introducing myself. my name is celeste and I love turtles! I also love other reptiles as well. I used to have a bearded dragon but had to put him to sleep . Reptile-wise I have 3 turtles: Bob, Tiny, and Raphael. I have had them for a bit over three years. Got them when they were pretty darn small and now they are kinda big.
I was hoping someone would have some advice for me...you see my husband changes their water every week and the filter media monthly, but lately it just doesn't stay clear and it gets smelly. Quick too, within days it's stinky and cloudy. We bought a new filter machine (the fluval 304) thinking that would solve the issue, but no. We do have a lot of algae in the tank despite us scrubbing and using algae destroyer. Any ideas? I'd appreciate it.

well first what kind of turtles are they and do you feed them in a separate container? if you feed them in a separate container the tank will be cleaner and are they in separate tanks? if not then what size of tank are you using?

| We do not feed them in separate place. We have three turtles (2 cooters and one slider which grew up together) in a 40 gallon tank.

Feed them (individually) in a large Kritter Keeper/Faunarium/Pal Pen/etc. filled with un-filtered, warm water. Put in food and leave the turtle for 15 minutes.
Consider buying an Algae Eater Fish. Good ones for your tank would be:
Bristlenose Pleco
Candy Striped Pleco
True Zebra Pleco
Chinese Algae Eater
Golden Chinese Algae Eater
Royal Farlowella Catfish
etc. (look on www.liveaquaria.com for more)

I would agree with everyone that feeding in a separate container is better, any plastic tub that holds water and they can't escape out if your back is turned is good. How long do you have the lights on for? is the tank near a window? When was the last time you changed your lights? These all are causes for algae growth. Also do you have gravel on the bottom of the tank that maybe traping food? Do you plan on getting a larger tank?
- Bearded Dragon
- 5 Viper Geckos
- Sinaloan Milksnake
- 82 Tarantulas and counting
- Albino Pacman Frog
- 4 Birds
- dwarf hamster
- Male Betta
- Baby red devil/Midas cichlids
- 7 gallon nano reef tank
- 125 gallon freshwater tank.

turtlelover08 (9/25/2008) First let me start off by saying hello and introducing myself. my name is celeste and I love turtles! I also love other reptiles as well. I used to have a bearded dragon but had to put him to sleep . Reptile-wise I have 3 turtles: Bob, Tiny, and Raphael. I have had them for a bit over three years. Well to start off Hi & Welcome to Reptile Channel! I have 2 8-10" big male pond sliders in a 55 gallon aquarium, with separate land area. We feed them in their tank, and do a complete water change once a week. (It is not practical to feed aquatic turtles in a separate tank-first they have to be fed in water, & second the water level needs to be as deep as the turtles are long for them to feed. We use 2 different styles of water cleaners with them, first is a "submersible pump fluval 4 plus" and other is "2 dirt magnates (for 40gallon aquariums) hooked up through airline tubing to a double air pump". The 2 different types helps with different levels of filtration & cleaning. One thing to note, is adult turtles should only be fed 2 to 3 times a week, and watch how much they eat in about 15 minutes, whatever they don't eat by then, scoop it out. That will help with smell and water clarity. I have 1 basking heat lamp and 1 florescent UV bulb on them, and they have a separate land area. We have never had problems with algae, just with a calci stain on the glass above the water level. Here are some pics of our turtles, & tank setup: Python No Spill Clean 'N Fill for Terrariums/Aquariums/Ponds
It's hard to see, but there is an acrylic piece in the water about 6 inches or so wide, and over a foot long, for them to climb out onto the land area Also we bought & use regularly a "no spill clean & fill" (ours is a different brand than the one pictured above), and it works great to help clean and do full water changes monthly (sometimes we have to fill the tank twice and suck it out to get the gravel completely clean tho). Also have 3 large turtles in a 40 gallon tank is too many for such a small place, you either need to separate them, or get a much larger tank. I know even our 2 our getting too big for their 55 gallon tank, but hubby & I are working on getting an outdoor pond built for them! Hopefully this helps some Marine
