| What do you think of zoos? Do you think of them as great places were we can view animals from across the world and were animals-especially endangered-can be bred, helping the species overall population? Or perhaps you think of them as awful facilities were animals are shoved in cages for public enjoyment. I personally go with the first. The latter was how they may have been some years ago, but they've definetly improved. Your thought please.

I defiantly agree with everyone so far
i think its pretty ignorant to say that zoos are cruel in general. sure there are some that are in it for the money, but the majority are interested in educating the public and maintaining wild populations.

Well now a days a zoo HAS to have a "mission". They can't just catch animals and put them on display, they have to contribute to conservation and protection of animals/nature in some way. At least thats what it is in the U.S.

Reptile_Dude (9/26/2008) What do you think of zoos? Do you think of them as great places were we can view animals from across the world and were animals-especially endangered-can be bred, helping the species overall population? Or perhaps you think of them as awful facilities were animals are shoved in cages for public enjoyment. I personally go with the first. The latter was how they may have been some years ago, but they've definetly improved. Your thought please. I like the first two, but I have personally seen a few zoos that could definitely do a better job at housing/cleaning/maintaining the animals enclosures! Mostly I have noticed that in the reptiles section. I've seen huge snakes, in some fairly inadequate sized enclosures on display. Or even mixing of different species that may coexist in the wild, but I personally don't think they should be that way in a zoo & on display. But for the most part, there a lot of good zoos out there, and most have the credidation as a certified zoo. But I do not like roadside zoos, and circuses; for how they cage/treat their animals! I think there should be law in all states mandating on how zoos/parks/circuses/etc have to house, feed, treat, clean, etc all their animals! Marine

I agree with all of you preaty much.Even though I had not been to a zoo in like ten years I would say most zoos in my area are preaty well kept. They are clean from what I see and the animals seem happy. But yet again I was like nine or ten so I don't know much about zoos.
