Personally, I have found that keeping multiples in one cage (harem) has caused injury to other mice (competition?). I usually just stick one male/one female per 10 gallon and wait about three to four weeks-when she is showing. Of course, sometimes the male shoots blanks, but what the hey. Try again. (I have accidentally mated brother and sister with no harmful effects.) She then gets her own home with shelter and cardboard tubing from toilet tissue, with a little tissue still on the tubing. She uses this, along with the tubing, for her 'nest'. I will exchange the water dish for a water bottle, so that the fuzzies don't drown in the dish (learned this the hard way=( ). Plenty of rodent pellets to go around also. Some mothers turn into 'killer mice', i.e., she likes to attack my fingers when I clean her cage or feed her. I have been breeding mice for over four years now, with over a dozen cages in the house, along with four snakes, a leopard gecko, and two betta fish (not easy to find dates with this farm!). Also trying my hand at a mealworm farm.

Sometimes you can get a particularly aggressive female or male. Scientific Studies have been done that have shown when a new female (or male) is put into a cage, leave her/him in their for only 2 minutes. Take her/him out for about 10 minutes then put her/him back in. You should only have to do this about 3 times then the harem will not act aggressively to the new comer and will accept him/her into the group. This will not work if you have already have a male and are trying to introduce another male. This usually only works when it comes to additional females added to the harem.

Other times it won't matter what you do, some mouse is going to be a problem mouse (and their offspring will be problem mice too). It's best to either replace this lemon with another, or try moving it to a different harem where it has to be on the defensive and learn its place anew in the hierarchy. None of my mice have been killed by other mice. I usually keep a pretty good idea of the personalities/social status of each mouse/rat. The harem system has worked wonderfully for me for over a year now. The only problem was buying all the individual birthing cages for each female! lol (Sometimes almost all are pregnant at once)

Rest in Peace Odin!!!  Your life may have not meant anything to those that abused you; but you meant everything to me.  You will be missed my little friend.
