Ok, so I reeeeally want a ball python, but my mom is making me wait until the summer to get one (Plus I have to get all A's in school...bleh). Plus, by next summer we should be getting close to buying a house so it can have tons of room.
So, for now, and on my x-mas list is a kenyan sand boa. I know there easy to care for and breed, but how are they handling wise? Are they the kind of snake who you can take out and walk around the house? Would it be an ok snake to go outside with and take a walk around the block or something with? Another plus is their small size, we are living in an apartment with a yard and so we dont really have a lot of space for a big ball python tank right at this moment.
Could anyone else recommend some friendly, on the smallish size (could be kept in a 40-50 gal. breeder for whole life),good eaters, and easy breeder would be a plus snakes?
Thanks so much,
Ali

| Actually an average sized Ball Python (Python regius) should live in only a 20 gallon long. If you get a huge female, you will need a 40 breeder. Ball Pythons actually get stressed in too large of a cage. Kenyan Sand Boas (Eryx colubrinus loveridgii) need only a 10-20 gallon (long) cage. They only get 1-2 feet, so they are a very manageable size. I think a Ball Python is a better choice for you, I don't know if you could really take a Sand Boa outside. Ball Pythons are extremely docile.

Go with a ball python...their great! Yet, sand boas are unique too, so I guess I can't say. The only draw back to a ball python is that they need larger enclosures than the sand boas do.

| No, their scientific name is Eryx colubrinus loveridgei. I believe it was just recently changed from Gonogolophis colubrinus loveridgei. Just Google "Kenyan Sand Boa" or "Kenyan Sand Boa Scientific Name". Well, I just meant in general. Most of the time the females are larger than the males. But she could end up with a big male like you did. I just meant the usual length of Kenyan Sand Boas. You could always get a big Kenyan Sand Boa, or a friendly Tokay Gecko, or a calm Day Gecko. But it just isn't as likely.

If you are looking for ball python alternatives, and want to keep something that is not as common, consider these small snakes; spotted python ( 3.5 to 4ft), Childrens Python (2.5 to 3 ft), western hognose ( 3ft) rosy boa ( 3 to 4 ft) None of these snakes require the humidity that is needed for ball pythons. I have a hog and a Children's, and find them very easy to maintain. I don't buy the idea that ball pythons are stressed in larger cages. Provide a cage that allows the snake room to stretch to their full length and move freely with plenty of cozy places to hide and there is no problem.

I am going to go with ratsnake on this one
I also dont agree that balls get stressed in bigger cages. When there little, maby, but as an adult, a larger cage is the way to go. I would just add that if you do go with a large cage you should have more hides. This way they can cruse from one part of the cage to the other without feeling like they have no where to go if they get spooked by something.
