i have a 20 month old sav and im looking for people to talk about them with. lol

nothing major, just kinda peves me but my male sav seems to perfer my girlfriend over me. if im holding him he'll be fine... until she comes over, he'll just keep trying to get away from me to get near her. not aggressively he just wiggles and doesnt sit still until hes cuddleing with her. if im letting him roam my room and shes over he'll just climb up a chair or my bed to get to her.    just wondering why

Hi! I just bought a Savvy from a reptile store I've been going to for 2 years. The previous owner works there and is very informative about how he was raised. He tends to go for the feeders' hands. I told him to use tongs with mice and rats, so that the monitors in the store wouldn't associate a hand with food and would be less likely to bite the hand. THIS WORKS!

Very smart Varanidae! They CAN learn new routines if you stick to them, too. Don't let them rule YOU! They need to know who's boss or you're going to lose the fight.

Believe it or not, this was an impulse buy, but I've dealt with large lizards and monitors before and the guy just took to me immediately. He's coming home Christmas Eve, and I'm going over there every day to hold him. In three days, he knows my smell and just melts into my chest when I hold him. LOVES being rubbed everywhere and is well content and perfectly healthy.

If you've never had a lot of experience with large lizards, please...don't get a monitor! You can't completely tame them, but you can predict their behavior if you train them well.
Thanks for the training tape!

Jo

Here's Harry:

what a cool guy, i cant wait till mine is that big, mine is my first monitor and first real large lizard that i have owned i have had pleanty of experience with them though, not savs but other things, i really wanted a big lizard and i am hoping he will grow up real big and friendly as i can get him, he is cage agressive though i think its because he eats 75% of his food in there i think i need to stop that because he hisses and tailwhipps now, i am working on teaching him no when he puffs and hisses real angry, i am so happy to hear you have a new baby, good luck, sounds like you know ehat your doing.

Thanks, SP! I've just fallen head over heels for him. Very loving...came from a loving owner. I'm visiting him daily so that the new house, new smells, new habitat, etc. will make the transition home much easier and less upsetting. I'm so excited I can't stand it! A friend is visiting for Christmas and I'm keeping him a secret while we get the apartment cleared out. I don't know how long I'll be able to keep the secret when I want to go to the reptile store everyday!! LOL!

He'll be expecting to see me when I come in so often, wearing old dirty clothes that smell like me. Not looking to purty in that pic, as I'm trying to get him to know my scent well. He's a fun size...like the size of a baby cradled in my arms.
