Yea, males will only live about 2 years after he "hooks out". They get tibial hooks on the front set of legs. Females live the 20+ years. Like Joseph said they aren't sure how long they actually live.

It isn't uncommon that in a pet store that you have mature males. A lot rose hairs are still wild caught. When they collect the species in the wild the males are the ones that are out wondering around. Making them easier to catch. If you are buying from a pet store you can ask if they are WC or CBB. If it is a sling then it is usually at least CB. At my store before we stopped carrying tarantulas only 1 out of 4 was a female. One was a mature male and our first one we bought it "hooked out" a year after we got him.

You are right about that. I don't think pokey's get the hooks either. I do believe that they all get the boxing gloves though. The reason that I talked about the hooks is that the G. rosea does have them. and it is an easy way to tell with them. Hubby said that there is a list but he can't find it that tells all the species that don't get hooks.

Usually but not always, they give warning signs that you have to interpret their actions. We have some that are cage defencive. Once out of their cage they are fine. If you use a paint brush or tongs etc to encourage them to come out of their enclosure once they move up the side but your hand out and have them walk on it themselves.

Sometimes their attitudes change when they have either just molted or are going to molt.
