i am about to get a real young baby corn. the guy at the reptile store said to put him in a plastic cage that is 13inx7inx5in with a 1.5in layer of aspen bedding. the guy at the pet store said this is a good cage for him for a little while. the corn is a little more than 5in long at the moment. is this a good cage size for him for the time being until he gets bigger? also he said he wont need and type of heating or lighting but have him near a window that gets sunlight. is this true? i need some input thanks

| Well, in theory a baby snake could do ok in a cage that size for a little while. If the room temperature is always in the low to mid 80s during the day, you could get away with not having a heat source, but once fall and winter comes around, you will need it, My snake room gets warm in the summer, so my thermostats keep the heaters off most of the time and they do fine. With a cage that size, it is almost impossible to get a thermal gradient (warm and cool side). A heat matt will melt it and lamp won't work well with it. Be very carefull when putting a cage near a window. Direct sunlight could overheat the cage and kill your snake, so make sure he is not directly in front of a window. Snakes don't need lighting, just heat. Normal room lighting will provide a day/night cycle. Just invest in a cage that your snake can grow into. A 10-20 gallon tank with a heat matt or red lamp on one side connected to a thermostat will make a good home for it for well over a year. Provide some cozy hiding spots and he'll have a nice home.
